Unless their T&Cs have changed since I had my warranty with them it is also worth noting that you don't get any cover for the first 90 days of the policy. This helps protects WD against exiting issues.

I believe that only relates to wear and tear items. If the claim is not wear and tear related you can claim anytime in the first 90 days.

I love that, 12 months cost for 9 months cover!

I was interested when I bought my car last September. After three failed attempts of the manager of the 'prestige' car department (I.e. He didn't phone when he had arranged to) I told them to keep it.

The cover is in place from the start and you can claim in the first 3 months, just not for wear and tear... which to be honest from an Insurer perspective is fair enough. Otherwise they would get every Tom, ***** & Harry buying a policy when they know there are items that will require attention due to wear and tear. Don't forget, the OPC warranty does not cover wear and tear at all... ever.

You'd be amazed what gets classed as fair wear & tear when it comes to the crunch.

So looks like most of the questions have been covered and responded too. But I'll reply to the Lite request a few pages back. The Lite cover is the main cover minus the MOT and Service call outs, and needs to be a break down. Although mine was a non starter at home and just had it recovered to the local Indy. For a 10yr old C4S warranty wise this was a very good value until her 13th birthday as most out there will not cover, or are at a greatly reduced cover. The claim I have is due to pay out in next 2 weeks will keep you posted. If all is well then I have my moneys worth plus another 18mths of cover. With my personal experience with them sales and aftercare I can not fault them, or my Local Indy. But it is all subjective, if anyone is interested I have a scan of the Lite cover just PM me you Email address.

I've been lurking with interest regarding this thread. Which I don't ordinarily do, either interest or lurk. :D

Having read the various input, and where I respect others and their choices, don't get a third party warranty. I also become extremely suspicious, casting no aspersions now, when members of the forum with fewer than a handful of posts espouse a particular third party warranty provider. I highly recommend one of the options below.

1. OPC Warranty.
2. Maintenance Plan (such as Hartech). Other Indies are available.
3. Put the money in a jar.

They are not necessarily in order.

If you do decide to utilise a third party warranty, due to age of vehicle for instance, then for the love of God ensure you:

1. Read it. Read all of it. Read everything. Carefully.
2. Ask for clarification if you are unsure.
3. Do NOT under any circumstances accept ANY 'additional' promises at all from the sales person. Written in email, blood or otherwise.
4. Any agreed amendments or changes must come from the underwriters. Not the sales persons boss, or his boss, or his boss.
5. Do not accept the terms or sign the contract unless they contain within them, or reference them as Appendices, the agreed amendments.
6. Seek advice. Preferably professional advice.

Rant over. :pc:

Sorry you feel that way Plavix, I have no connection, family, friend, work associate with WD or any other 3rd party cover provider. Only expressing my experience, and only owning my life time baby since Dec cant really have posted much on the forum. I in no way wish to plug or coerce anyone one in to a 3rd party warranty, please ALL review with eye wide open. Looks like I need to earn my spurs first.

It's okay. I had no intention to cause offence or question motivation and wanted to ensure, where people prefer a third party warranty, that they were suitably armed. I have the t-shirt.

There are reasons to discount the OPC warranty, such as the insane application of 'modification'. There are reasons to discount a Maintenance plan, such as not giving full and complete cover. Sticking it in a jar won't work for me as I'll just spend it on things for my car. :thumb:

Hey No problem, feeling a little touchy as my jar been broken from early ownership. I did step in with my eyes open did the research, thought I got the right one but she still had a nip at me. Believe she fully sorted now and the 3rd party Warranty has helped out for me. Just got to wait for some fruity sounds a bit longer as a little lighter in the pocket. But you are right people do need to look closely at the small print. Looking forward to a long loving ownership, and follow a very informative forum. It has been invaluable for me.

Plavix... I completely agree with your sentiments and I would add the same guidelines apply to any warranty, whether it is OPC, Hartech or another third party. They all have their pros and cons and at the end of the day everyone should thoroughly research and do their homework before making their decision. I am currently leaning towards the OPC warranty as the price is only slightly higher than the WD policy.

+1

This is such an interesting thread and it's wonderful that people are willing to share their research, opinions and experiences. My car is approaching it's 8 year service and has 100% OPC service history. I bought it from RSJ last September so it's in the final 5 months of their warranty, which is now covering just engine/gearbox internal failure labour cost.

Staying OPC for service & warranty is attractive, but pricey and I've installed LTT, dectane LEDs and a Dension 500, so "modifications" problems there I suspect. I respect Hartech and their maintenance plan, but they are 260 miles away, not exactly convenient. I've scoured the Warranty Direct product and feel it's the best of the 3rd party, although I'm aware they could be skilled at not paying out.

So, I have a quandary and I imagine it's a pretty common one.

Plavix, you mention other Indies are available with Maintenance Plans. Do you have any you could mention?

Also, are there other 3rd parties people feel are worthy of consideration? Are people like the AA any good?

The way this is going, the money in a jar approach could be the way to go, life is too short to spend time worrying or reading warranty policy smallprints, then again, it needs to be a big old jar if the worst happens :x

From a quick Google Maintenance Polices can be provided by the below. There may be others so the list can't be classified as exhaustive. They all essentially copied Hartech. You'll note they are biased towards the North too:

Hartech
Sports and Classic
JMG
Revolution

Tech9 used to have one. I'm surprised that JZM don't appear to have one.

Can anyone else add to this list?

I went through the same exercise last January when the initial 3 year warranty on my GTS expired.

I was tempted by WD only because they had no problem with me fitting MPSS tyres. The prices were quite similar and the wear & tear cover seemed to sway things in their direction.

In the end I decided to stay with what I knew best.. and that was OPC cover.

I don't regret it in the slightest as it's a relatively inexpensive way to achieve what is most important to me... peace of mind! I also dismissed the idea of putting the money in a jar as, for total peace of mind, I couldn't find a big enough jar!!

Don't blame you sticking with OPC warranty on your GTS. For me there's the mods I'd like to keep, I'm happy with my Indie to do the servicing and WD have quoted £700 less than OPC for a 2 year policy. Other than a massive jam jar, it's a maintenance plan or WD SecureCare for me I think.

PS. The "Lite" WD product that Gaz41 refers to looks like a fair product for a fair price to me. It's about 30% of the price of a full policy and I can see why it could easily pay for itself with just 1 breakdown/recovery/repair episode.

I have a "best" offer on the table from WD (2 year and 3 year options) pricing is roughly 2/3rds OPC warranty. I've looked at the maintenance plans and like them a lot, but none of the specialists that do them are near to me, which just adds to cost and inconvenience to go with one of them I think.

I've done as much as I can reasonably do in studying the WD t&cs and I've questioned, clarified and negotiated my way to this point to include some specific schedule amendments to the core policy which is their Performance and Prestige SecureCare (6-10 year old high-end cars)
http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/pdfs/9936-WD_PrestigePolicy_BK_SecureCare.pdf

It doesn't cover suspension and aircon, but what it covers and doesn't cover on pages 10 & 11 is clear. The items it doesn't cover seem to be consumables and look reasonable to me. I've never bought a warranty this way before so if anybody has input please feel free!

I scanned through that briefly. The consumables would entail a large proportion of an engine rebuild, such as mounts, hoses, casings and housings. It's only the core they cover. They have also excluded "burnt or pitted' regards valves but the wording is such that they may be able to apply that in a wider sense.

The same 'consumables' restriction goes for any major component such as gearbox for instance.

OPC warranty does not cover suspension either and is limited regarding air con.

Hi plavix, agreed, the consumables aspect is quite extensive, but I weighed that against a belief that approx 50% of the cost of any failure would be labour and that approx 80% of the parts cost would be the core components. Am I a mile off with that thinking? Is the consumables aspect more restrictive than OPC?
