Hi there

Currently got a lovely 996 c2 tiptronic but fancy something a bit more classic

So, looking for a 964 coupe tiptronic. Doesn't have to be completely mint at all but needs to stand up to a daily drive of 30 minutes or so.

Looks like there aren't too many about - any advice on where to find one - or what to look for (or even avoid)?

Thanks

Phil

Hi phil, I own a tip and I love it, they are bullet proof but love a fluid and filter change, don't be put off by oil leeks, 99% have them! Get someone to check it out if your not sure.
Don't get sucked into this top end engine rebuild nonsense either, they can do high mileage without needing one, I honestly believe people get the engine rebuilt to high expense when they don't need them.
Main issue now is rust! Check the scuttle panel, they will rust under the windscreen rubber and bubble up on the scuttle. Front wings were they meet the bumpers, rear quarters were they meet the bumpers, under the headlights and some cars are rotting behind the shark fin but some seem totally unaffected in this area, anyway it's all fixable
The tip is nice to commute in, I find I always leave mine in auto and never put it in tiptronic.

What he said :thumb:
The only thing I would add is that I have seen a few with rust under the rear screen rubber at the bottom corners (have a good nose through my thread 'The Red Baron') there was much debate early on about paying more for better or less and get work done. Many photo's that show the rust and the remedy. Good luck with the search :thumb:

When you find a 964 you're happy with i'd have a specialist carry out a PPI (pre-purchanse inspection).

It'll give you a list of jobs to fix, could highlight any major problems and is a great way to bargain the price of the car down. It'll pay for itself ;)

It should give you a good "fix-it list" for getting the car perfect too :)

Hi again and thanks for the advice

Still on the look for a 964 tip. Nearly got one at auction but just missed out.

Wondering if anyone out there might be thinking of selling.....?

A coupe tip (ideally with aircon) is what I'm after.

996 to 964 - You know it makes sense chum  :thumb:

The one at auction. Was that the one listed at £8k-£10k guide but sold for £16k+ :?: I knew someone else after that.

Dont expect the AC to work when you find one as it will likley need commissioning unless the owner is someone like me that must have everything working :bonk:

Having said that when it wasn't I'll admit I didn't really miss it as I tend not to run on the dash fans. Natural air flow plus roof and window slightly open was enough.

Hi, I've just bought a 1990 C2 Targa which has an oil leak. It had been stood still in a garage for 5 years but only failed the MOT for faulty horn and fog light.

I asked the garage to check the oil leak out when they had it on the ramp but they seemed reluctant to get too involved.

What's the common areas to look at? Drives great but not happy about leaving oil patches everywhere!

Cheers

Hi again.
Yes, I was bidding on the coupe that went for £16k+
Very difficult for me to get beyond £15k given I was on the phone and couldn't quite work out how good it was.
Perhaps it was just the one that got away

Just need to find one now.... would even consider one needing a full respray (which would give the excuse to turn it bright green

Come on guys - anyone fancy selling?

Phil

Yes, i spotted that one.
I need my 964 to be a daily driver no matter what the weather
So, not really sure the targa would fit the bill. But love the look and the open top.

The C2 targa tips are probably the best value 964,I had a 3.2 targa which i thought was great (which i only ended up with after a drunken late night bid on ebay ) However if the roof is not adjusted spot on which is an absolute black art the wind noise is murder leaking not so much of a problem., a bit of a trade of a bit cheaper to buy spend a bit with an expert to get the roof spot on . The targa look can be pretty marmite to a lot of people but I found it to be a cracking allrounder and would love to have one in the garage next to my coupe.

good luck

I have a Tip as a daily driver in London, I absolutely love it; easy to drive but has power when you need it. More people are cottoning on to what great car they are with a Tip box. I use it 50/50 auto and Tip. The only thing missing is paddles for the steering wheel; though I have seen people have fitted these.
Do get a PPI. I didn't but have been lucky, it just gives you peace of mind. For the first few months I thought any unusual noise problem until I have it fully service and checked.
I highly recommend one , good luck with your search.

Congratulations Phil and welcome to the 964 forum, I wish you many happy days and miles of safe motoring.
