a future classic, here today

November 30, 2013 Brooklands Historic Auction
Sold - £22,400

From 1990 to 1995, Mercedes-Benz sold a high-performance version of the W124, the Mercedes-Benz 500E. The 500E was created in close co-operation with Porsche; each one being hand-built by Porsche and transported back and forth between the Mercedes plant and Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany during assembly with a full 18 days being taken to complete each model.

The 500E had a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 engine derived from the 500SL (R129). Braking performance also came from SL components. The 500E was manufactured as a four seat saloon and in left hand drive only. The leather seats were supplied by Recaro with the fronts being electrically operated and heated. Called the "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" by the press, performance tests of the day yielded impressive results with 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) times of 5.5 to 6.0 seconds. The top speed was 260 km/h (161.5 mph) with the engine speed limited to 6000 rpm.

On offer today is a low mileage Mercedes-Benz 500E manufactured in March 1993 and supplied to a dealer in Bremen. The odometer reading of 80150 kms equates to 49802 miles; low indeed as these cars are usually found today with huge mileages on them. The coachwork is resplendent in blue/black metallic (paint code 199) with black Recaro leather interior. A set of period BBS alloy wheels, fitted with excellent tyres, complement the dark exterior finish. At some point this 500E was exported to Japan and was recently imported into the UK, at which time the UK import duties were paid. The vendor advises that, upon arrival at sale, the car will have received a service, MoT test certificate, UK registration and valid road fund licence so that it may be enjoyed straight away.

With its aggressive stance, 1.5 inch wider track, lower profile, flared wheel arches, side skirts, front air-dam and wider tyres, the 500E is easily distinguished from its lesser brethren. Because of its look, limited numbers, hand-built construction at Porsche and its unique pedigree, the 500E is already considered a 'classic'; even within Mercedes-Benz, and this therefore represents an ideal opportunity to acquire a very special car; particularly given the keen estimate.
