Difficult to know which oil to use... we are in France and would like to know best oil to use for a 1997, 993 Carrera 2. And are there any recommended independent Porsche specialists in Gironde?

Hi Desmond - I too am in France and not too far from you. I have sent you a pm.

oil recommendation threads on car forums, lovely, who's going first then?

Ask 10 people get 10 different answers.

Search is your friend on here but be prepared to read lots of conflicting views. Been done to death on here, so best to read the previous ones than retread old ground.

OK, I'll go first then.

Magnatec 10W 40.

The below posts are wrong.

MTR

PS - Apart from the one that agrees with me.

Well, I was told at Byfleet that Mobil 1 is what they would recommend for any 993 up about 100k miles.

Mine hasn't always been run on this, but as I seem to remember someone saying "it's not the brand of oil, it's the lack of it that causes the damage" - or something like that.

well mine's done 122k and they've just filled it with Mobil 1! Wouldn't have been my first choice based on what others have posted on here but I'm no expert. Before that it was running on 10W40 Mobil Super Sport semi synth and that seemed ok. I also tried Millers 10W50 and that seemed ok too but I didn't notice any difference in consumption (about 1 litre per 1000-1200 miles)

I'm with MTR :sing:

As recommended by Hartech and my local all knowing indie.

IMHO tho theres very little to chose between the good oils .. If you find someone who's got lots of experience and who can give you a partisan recommendation , them that's probably good enough.

i run silkolene(TITAN RACE PRO) 5w40 fully synthetic in my 110k c2... its ester based which should seal swell if the marketing is to be believed but most importantly the engine sounded a fair bit quieter than when it was on mobile 10w/40 semi, not to say the mobil was a bad oil.

I am toying with the idea of moving to the same oil in 10w/50 but thats only for my own paranoi in heavy traffic as it would increase the warm idle oil pressure a bit but ultimatly decrease mpg and bhp from the engine...

I've just bought Havoline Ultra 5w40 fully syn for my upcoming service. It accords to the factory approved list (2008), meeting the ACEA A3 specification. Not used it before, but reputable brand and approved.

For what it's worth, I just picked up 5litres of Shell Helix 10W-40 (which is what Mike at Sports and Classic put in mine at the last service) for £15.99 from Euro Car Parts. :thumb:

Obviously my 996 engine is quite different from a 993 but Mike tells me that 0W-40 is overkill on a 911, and that he goes with either Mobil1 or Shell Helix (both 10W-40), whichever he can get in bulk at the time, and both are perfectly suited for a 911.

Discuss... :dont know:

LOVE IT, as predicted, ten replies, all different. I do like the sound of the seal swelling, ester based silkoline. That sounds the way forward if it actually works ? Especially in the light of the recent "through bolts" thread. Anyone any experience of the efficacy of this ? :dont know:

Wow I've been so busy I nearly missed this thread

As you are in France there is no question: Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W40; a proper fully synthetic oil, still on Porsches recommended list, and no-one in the world, Rennlist included, has a bad thing to say about it. :thumb:

As said why not if in France, use the best oil on planet:Motul V300 or Fuchs Titan
