Hi there

Well when I got my C2S in March this year, I had all the work required to pass the 111 point check done by Mike at S&C, plus some extra work, new plugs, new coils and an oil change, at this point the car was on circa 30,000 miles.

Its previous service was at 24,000 in April 2010, so certainly at no point due yet.

On the 911, well its rear engine makes life very easy, especially on my driveway and onto doing the oil change I am amazed as to how easy it was. I drained the oil warm, then put through 1/2 litre of fresh oil to make sure all the old was out, which in honesty looked pretty clean anyway, but the car is on just over 35,000 miles, so its only been in their 5000 miles max.

Some pictures:-

I then decided to disect the old filter and check for metal particles as its rumoured this can be an early detection of an IMS failure, needless to say upon pulling my filter apart I was happy to be unable to find anything, so fingers crossed looks like my IMS is all good, here is a picture of the filter dismantled:-

I shall be taking my car for its Porsche service in March/April 2012 which will mean since my ownership the car is getting fresh oil circa every 5000-6000 miles, maybe this is a bit ***** especially considering I have warranty, but my view is oil is less money than an engine and a whole lot less stress. I like to look after my cars and if I can help prevent a failure by doing a couple of oil services between the set Porsche services I will. :)

Plus its my oppinion that 20,000/2yr intervals is too long and could be why 997.1 had a few engine failures as the protective properties in oils I suspect don't quite last so long but I'm not an oil expert. Still for the price of oil makes sense to just change the oil more regular, 10l can be had for sub £80 so its not huge amounts of cash.

Good work :thumb:

Glad the filter was clear.

I do exactly what you do but also put it in the dealer for its service too. Good hint re .5 L through to get rid of old oil, I'll do that next time.
What are peoples thoughts on changing the antifreeze? I do realise its lifetime but new fluids, surely, cant harm !

Imdont change my own oil, but then my car only does 1,700 miles between OPC services.

I do, however, request they retain the filter for my perusal.

As for lifetime coolant, I interpret that as 4-5 years max (although almost clockwork rad perforation probably means even Porsche view it as this sort of timescale too!).

Mike did my coolant flush/change when he fitted the centre X51 radiator. :)

Also I still do let Porsche service it as well when its due, I just change the oil myself in between them seeing it, they also know this and are fine about it. I guess they would be though, less chance I will be claiming under warranty, LOL.

going to get my oil changed, I just hit the 80k mark now, man I spend more time driving than working, I have done around 10,000 in a month hahah so I need to get my plugs changed over so will have the plugs n oil done same time i guess.

you actually reminded me :)

Hi what is the best oil for the carrera S.
Porsche tell me 0w40 and another tells me 10w40? any ideas?

also Porsche want £280+vat to change oil and filter and wont even stamp my book as its not something they claim to do as a seperate job.

I use Motul X-Max 8100 0W/40. It's a higher spec than Mobil 1 and cheaper too.

I am sure its fine but its not Porsche approved.

Look at this one:-

Look at the approvals and any oil you buy needs to have this:-
-Porsche A40

Now I am sure its not a requirement, but as there are quite a few which are Porsche approved I'd advice you still with those.

Lots of things which are higher spec/quality than standard never get the Porsche approved moniker.

Michelin Pilot Super Sports aren't Porsche approved (yet), but it doesn't stop OPC's selling them and the Experience Centre using them!

And the approved viscosity for a Carrera is 0W/40, not 5W/40.

I agree, I no longer take the word of Porsche, I would rather take advise from a porsche specialist thats why I am just going to book her in and have a major done, its about 10k miles to early but my plugs are due and my oil could do with changing so £250 + vat for the oil and filter and £175 + vat for the plugs, makes it better for a full major at £420 + vat through strasse that do the oil and filter and plugs and a full service.

Plus they are going to fit my k&n and my new throttle body and plenum when its made and I fancy a trip to ewood park anyhow to the blackburn rovers club shop :D

Agreed.

Both 0W-40 and 5W-40 are both approved Porsche viscosity's I believe or at least thought? And 5W-40 can be better suited so engines with more miles, something Baz/Hartech went into great detail explaining and some will tell you 0W-40 is better.

Either way they are both approved and fine to use. :)

I know of some putting 10W-60 in their engines, I'd not personally and neither is it approved but again they don't seem to have issues, but this is GT guys I see mainly doing this which suggest to me no doubt due to more track use so they use that grade for more protection up top.

have my car booked in next week for full service ect.. but my oil shows flashing on the bottom notch, so put 1 L in before and no change~? got to wait 1 hour to check again, any ideas on this how to reset it and surly 1 litre would make some change?
