It's because OPCs can be such crap that there's so many good indies.

A big part of the problem is that the workshops are mainly staffed by fitters, not mechanics. Gone are the days when a good grease monkey would find a problem and engineer the fix. Now they have to replace component(s) as there's huge mark up on spares. If the diagnostic PC shows a fault then that part is replaced, when in many cases it could be repaired. Problem with the 111 check is when the PC doesn't see the fault.

All of the above based on comments made recently by a good trustworthy mechanic who's about to retire from an OPCbecause he's not allowed to do the job his way...

Hi We use Ray and the guys at Northway and we have got to say we have been really impressed by thier thorough approach to servicing our car for the last 7 years. I would use an independant specialist to check if buying, someone who knows these cars and cares about the service they offer.

Like "surveys" on houses, I do my own inspections now.

It is not just Porsche or OPCs. Prior to purchase I spent £500 (long story, I knew I was being shafted but had no real choice!) for a full inspection at a respected independent including a leakdown test for completeness. All was excellent short of a small oil leak and a duff fog light.

Fast forward 2 weeks to when I take possession and there is a great big rust bubble on the front scuttle panel. To my (amateur) mind, rot around the screen should have been pretty much the first check.

Moral of the story is that all these checks are subjective and prone to error. If at all possible, get any inspection done by someone you know personally.
