Porsche Carrera World Cup race at the Nürburgring 2011

The world's greatest Porsche race on the Nürburgring Nordschleife

It will be one of the most spectacular sprint races ever: At the Porsche Carrera World Cup on 25 June, 2011, up to 200 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racers will line up on the Nürburgring Nordschleife watched by more than 200,000 spectators. The world's greatest Porsche race takes place just prior to the start of the 39th ADAC 24 hour race and runs over a distance of six laps (152,268 km). The Porsche Carrera World Cup forms the season highlight of Porsche's 18 brand trophy series worldwide. This race counts as a competition round towards several championships, including the Porsche Carrera Cups in Germany, Scandinavia, France and Italy.

The field will be divided into two classes: The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup with 3.6-litre engines from 2007 to 2009 model years (400 to 420 hp) as well as the 3.8-litre versions of the 2010 and 2011 model years (450 hp). Each class is classified separately. All competitors must provide proof of their considerable track experience. For all Nordschleife rookies, an intensive two-day training course will take place in the week leading up to the event with former Porsche works driver Sascha Maassen as the head instructor.

'Since its market launch in 1998 we have built over 2,000 units of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car for competition in our 18 Porsche one-make championships around the world," explains Porsche's head of motorsport, Hartmut Kristen. 'With the Porsche Carrera World Cup on the northern loop of the Nürburgring, we aim to offer yet another highlight to our brand trophy customers all over the globe. Racing in the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup never fails to underline its excellent aptitude for the world's longest and most difficult races. I'm sure that this race will be an unforgettable experience for all pilots and spectators at the track."

Over the last years, the success story of Porsche Motorsport has been closely tied to the Nürburgring. From 2006 to 2009, the Porsche team, Manthey Racing, won the 24 hour race on the Nordschleife four times in a row. In May this year, the innovative Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid held the overall lead for more than eight hours at Germany's most popular automobile race. From the ten races on the VLN Nürburgring Long Distance Championship calendar this year, a Porsche 911 won nine times.

Nurburgring adventure for Porsche Carrera Cup GB

The biggest challenge in the history of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB awaits the drivers as the series heads to the Nurburgring Nordschleife for round nine of the championship during the Porsche Carrera World Cup (Saturday 25 June).

This record-breaking race will present Carrera Cup GB racers with the chance to tackle the track that is widely-regarded as the finest and most daunting in the world, with 88 corners packed into 14 miles of twisting track in the Eifel Mountains in Germany. To race on the Nordschleife is the dream of many drivers and the Carrera Cup racers will tackle a six-lap, 85-mile race on Saturday in the build up to the annual Nurburgring 24-hour race.

The Nordschleife is a track that rewards experience and from the Carrera Cup GB ranks it is Tim Harvey (Nationwide/Motorbase) who stands out as having the greatest knowledge of this remarkable race track. That level of prior track knowledge marks Harvey as a pre-race favourite, but over recent weeks the leading title contenders have all been gaining experience of the Nordschleife and a final round of familiaristion training is taking place this week.

Heading to Germany with a handy points' lead is James Sutton (SAS/Redline), who has a 20-point margin over team mate Michael Meadows. However, it is far too early for Sutton to be thinking about a second Carrera Cup title and his aim for the Nurburgring is another strong points' finish. Meadows, meanwhile, is having his best season to date and knows that he cannot afford to let Sutton add to his lead as the series heads into a seven-week mid-season break.

Two drivers from the Parker with Juta team are taking the fight to the SAS duo and both Stephen Jelley and Euan Hankey are determined to use the wild card of this race on the Nordschleife to peg back the points' gap. The experience of the track acquired by Stuart Parker and his team over the last decade could prove crucial in Saturday's race. Ben Hetherington (Oman Air/Redline) and Team Parker Racing's Sam Tordoff and Richard Plant are new to the track as well, but are all capable of claiming a podium place.

In Pro-Am1, Jonas Gelzinis (Juta Racing) is setting the pace and that is likely to continue in Germany, where he may well be right up among the pro drivers. Chasing Gelzinis are Ahmad Al Harthy (Oman Air/Redline) and Rory Butcher (Celtic Speed) and Butcher heads to Germany on the back of a stunning performance last time out in changing weather conditions at Oulton Park.

With Pro-Am2 leader Andrew Shelley (Redline Racing) missing the race due to family commitments, it is George Brewster (Celtic Speed) and Keith Webster (Redline Racing) who are poised to take over the Pro-Am2 lead. Other Pro-Am2 podium contenders are Richard Denny (Parr Motorsport) and Tommy Dreelan (Celtic Speed).

After qualifying at 15.25 on Friday, the Porsche Carrera World Cup will start at 11.20 on Saturday. Eurosport will carry a live TV broadcast of the race in a programme starting at 10.45 (local time).

A brief history of the Nurburgring

This weekend drivers from the Porsche Carrera Cup GB will be in Germany preparing for the Porsche Carrera World Cup on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (Saturday 25 June).

The Nordschleife, or 'Northern Loop', measures a massive 14.173 miles and is widely regarded as the most challenging track in the world. It is steeped in racing history and sits high in the Eifel Mountains, where unpredictable weather simply adds to the mighty challenge faced by the drivers.

The creation of this piece of motorsport legend dates back to the early 1920s when the ADAC ran road races in the Eifel Mountains. This was soon deemed dangerous and impractical and so construction of a dedicated track began, bringing employment and tourism potential to the region. The work was completed in 1927 when the 17.563-mile Gesamtstrecke ('whole course') was opened, incorporating the original 'Sudschleife' or Southern Loop. The fastest ever lap of the Gesamtstrecke was set by Louis Chiron's Bugatti at an average speed of 72mph. In the 1930s, racing legends like Rudolf Caracciola, Tazio Nuvolari and Bernd Rosemeyer starred in famous races at the Nurburgring and earned the tag of 'Ringmeister'.

The Gesamtstrecke was last used in 1939 and when the circuit re-opened in 1949, the focus was solely on the Nordschleife. The track was the main home to the German Grand Prix through the 1950s and 1960s and in 1961 US racer Phil Hill clocked the first sub-nine minute lap in qualifying.

Through the 1950s and 1960s, new generations of 'Ringmeisters' arose, with drivers like Alberto Ascari, Juan-Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart winning the German Grand Prix. Moss scored his last Grand Prix win there in 1961, while Stewart's masterful performance in the rain and fog of 196, when he won by four minutes, rates as one of the finest drives of his career.

In 1970, the 24-hour race was inaugurated, but concerns over safety for the Formula 1 cars were growing and the 1970 German Grand Prix was moved to Hockenheim in the face of a probable boycott by the F1 drivers. Changes were made and the Grand Prix returned, but the final German Grand Prix on the Nordschleife was run in 1976 and resulted in serious injuries for Niki Lauda after an accident on the second lap.

Although Formula 1 was no longer on the schedule, the Nurburgring continued to test drivers through the 1980s, 1990s and into the new millennium. The new Grand Prix circuit was constructed in 1984, but for many racers, it is the 14-miles of the Nordschleife, sometimes known as the 'Green Hell', that remains the biggest challenge in the sport.

Next weekend, a total of 23 competitors from the Carrera Cup GB and the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Challenge will contest the Porsche Carrera World Cup, which runs prior to the start of the 39th ADAC 24-hour race. It will run over a distance of six laps of the Nordschleife, approximately 95 miles, and more than 250,000 spectators are expected to watch the race.

The Porsche Carrera World Cup forms the season highlight of Porsche's 18 brand trophy series worldwide. This race counts as a round of several other national Carrera Cups, including Germany and Scandinavia. The entry for the race will be divided into two classes: the 911 GT3 Cup with 3.6-litre engines from 2007 to 2009 model years (400 to 420 hp) and the 3.8-litre versions of the 2010 and 2011 model years (450 hp).

Hankey stars in Carrera Cup GB at the Nurburgring

Euan Hankey was the absolute hero of the day in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at the Nurburgring Nordschleife today (Thursday 23 June) during testing ahead of round nine of the championship.

With a mighty performance on the toughest race track in the world, Hankey (Parker with Juta) belied his inexperience of the German venue to not only top the Carrera Cup GB field but also post eighth fastest time overall within the 100-strong field for the Porsche Carrera World Cup. Even though he has only raced at the Nordschleife once before, Hankey was the only driver from outside the Porsche Supercup and Carrera Cup Germany runners to feature in the top 10 times. He ended the session ahead of established Porsche and Nurburgring aces like Patrick Huisman, Nick Tandy and Jeroen Bleekemolen.

The Porsche Carrera World Cup is the biggest single-make Porsche race ever held, with 100 cars from Europe including 21 cars from the Carrera Cup GB and GT3 Cup Challenge. It was a fabulous sight as James Sutton headed 100 911 GT3 Cup cars out of the Formula 1 paddock onto the Grand Prix circuit at the start of testing. The race on Saturday morning will run over six laps of the daunting 14-mile Nordschleife circuit.

'This is the most incredible place in motor sport," said Hankey. 'I'm so enjoying it that I can't really put it into words. I've only raced here once and it is so overwhelming the first time you drive around it."

Next among the Carrera Cup GB crews were Sutton and Michael Meadows (SAS/Redline). 'It was hard work and a little bit sloppy," reported Sutton of his session. 'I bent the steering arm at the Carousel early in the session and so there is a lot of time to come in qualifying." Meadows suffered a similar fate to his team mate with a bent steering arm from the second lap. 'I love it; it's a great track," said Meadows.

In Pro-Am1, Jonas Gelzinis (Juta Racing) headed the times from Derek Pierce (Team Parker Racing) and Rory Butcher (Celtic Speed). Pro-A1 contender Ahmad Al Harthy (Oman Air/Redline) was bowled over by the whole experience. 'It's the hardest circuit I've ever driven on and really challenging in a Cup car," he said. 'It really is something special and like nothing we've ever done before."

In Pro-Am2, George Brewster (Celtic Speed) and Keith Webster (Redline Racing) were the Pro-Am2 pacesetters. 'That was the experience of my life," said Webster, who had previously done many laps of the Nordschleife on motorbikes. 'It is awesome; what a place to drive," he said.

Qualifying will be start at 15.25 on Friday afternoon, with the race at 11.20 on Sunday during the build up to the annual 24-hour race.

Sutton tops Carrera Cup GB pack at the Nurburgring

James Sutton was the leading Porsche Carrera Cup GB driver on the Nurburgring Nordschleife today (Friday 24 June) during qualifying for round nine of the championship, the Porsche Carrera World Cup. Jonas Gelzinis (Juta Racing) headed Pro-Am1 and George Brewster (Celtic Speed) set the Pro-Am2 pace.

Sutton (SAS/Redline) and Euan Hankey (Parker with Juta) headed the times, but both fell foul of the challenging track and crashed out before the end of qualifying. Sutton's car should be ready for Saturday's race, but will require a major amount of work from the Redline crew, but Hankey's will not be able to race.

A rain and hailstorm swept across the circuit shortly before qualifying, but the main Nordschleife was largely dry and most drivers started the hour-long session on slick tyres. Sutton set his best time on his second flying lap of the 14-mile track, but later spun into the barriers trying to improve on 17th place overall in the 100-car field. 'We had the job done and the car was fantastic, but the circuit bit me," admitted Sutton. The Redline team now faces a late night of work to fix the car, but team boss Simon Leonard is confident that it will be ready for the race on Saturday morning.

Things were not so good for Hankey, who had been the star of testing. Attacking the track in pursuit of a leading time he crashed heavily. Hankey was unharmed, but the car is out for the rest of the weekend. Third fastest in overall terms was Michael Meadows (SAS/Redline). 'The first lap was a nightmare and the Grand Prix track was the wettest part. No one knew how hard to push," said Meadows, who was only two seconds slower than Sutton.

Gelzinis headed Pro-Am1 with a fine performance ahead of his first race on the Nordschleife. 'I was very careful from the start and I decided to stay out of trouble," said the Lithuanian racer. 'The result is quite okay." Rory Butcher (Celtic Speed) was an excellent second fastest in Pro-Am1. 'I really enjoyed that," said the Scot. 'It's a real challenge and we are just so lucky to be racing here." Fellow Scot Derek Pierce (Team Parker Racing) was a very close third in Pro-Am1, despite a high-speed spin when catching a slower car. 'I was so pleased it stayed out of the barriers. I felt I had the pace for pole, but I got big traffic on my best lap."

Brewster made it a good day for Celtic Speed with the best time in Pro-Am2, after pitting mid-session to change the set-up to suit the drying track. 'I knew we had a chance of two flying laps and there were yellow flags, but we got a good run. The whole thing is amazing," said Brewster of the Porsche Carrera World Cup race weekend.

Second to Brewster was Keith Webster (Redline Racing) as Richard Denny (Parr Motorsport) completed the top three in Pro-Am2. 'I'm disappointed; I wanted to be P1 but I just couldn't string a lap together," said Webster. 'I love the track," said Denny, who found a 10s improvement over his best lap in testing.

Porsche Carrera World Cup on the Nürburgring

Motorsport fans around the world wait in eager anticipation for the 25th of June, 2011. On this day, Porsche adds yet another superlative to the history of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife: At the Porsche Carrera World Cup, more than 100 participants from 25 countries contest the greatest Porsche race of all time on the legendary race track that is also dubbed the 'green hell'.

The race on the legendary circuit in Germany's Eifel region with a total of 88 corners (northern loop plus the Grand Prix circuit) runs over six laps (152.268 kilometres), and is not just a case for the 'Guinness Book of Records'. It also poses the greatest sporting challenge imaginable for Porsche Cup pilots. 'The Nordschleife is a very tricky track," says Uwe Brettel, General Manager Motorsport Sales at Porsche. He sums up the fascination of this race aptly: 'The Carrera World Cup is the link between two very successful motorsport platforms: Porsche's one-make race series and the Nürburgring-Nordschleife."

The Porsche Carrera World Cup, which takes off just prior to the 24 hour race, is not only unique because of its giant grid, but also because of the sporting significance. Quantity and quality – that was the whole idea. And it worked: The Porsche Mobil1 Supercup as the world's fastest international one-make race series, and the well-supported Carrera Cups in Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy and Scandinavia count this event as one of their regular championship rounds. Drivers will be classified for their respective series as well as for the Porsche Carrera World Cup. Also joining the action are guest drivers from other Carrera Cups and GT3 Cup Challenges around the world.

One of the most prominent competitors is Craig Baird. Over the course of his outstanding career, the New Zealander has notched up 109 victories in Porsche one-make race series, making him the most successful Porsche Cup pilot in the world. Porsche AG invited him back to the Nordschleife, which he knows from two 24 hour races there, to drive the VIP-car with the starting number 200. His Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is also a feast for the eyes. Its design is an artistic interpretation of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife as the 'green hell' with licking flames as well as a stylised world map representing the 25 nations from which the international grid comes to contest the greatest Porsche race on earth. At the wheel of the second VIP-911 fielded by Porsche Cars North America, Melanie Snow celebrates her race debut on the Eifel circuit. The mother of four is one of the most well-known racers in the USA and for many years has contested the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge where she won the Gold Cup class in 2009. At the Porsche Carrera World Cup the 'world's fastest mum' is the only female in the field.

The field is divided into two classes: The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup with 3.6-litre engines from the 2007 to 2009 model years (400 to 420 hp) as well as the 3.8-litre version from the 2010 and 2011 model years (450 hp) are classified separately. Two sets of slicks and one set of wet tyres are permitted for each vehicle for the entire race weekend. The starting groups, consisting of a maximum of 70 vehicles per group, take off on their journey into the 'Green Hell" with a flying start (Indianapolis start). About two minutes separate each group.

So that the spectators can better recognise the vehicles, all start numbers have three-digits. The first numeral stands for the respective series from which the cars come. 0 stands for the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, the number 1 for the Carrera Cup France, the number 2 for the Carrera Cup Deutschland, number 3 for the Carrera Cup and the GT3 Cup Challenge Great Britain, 4 for the Carrera Cup Italia and 5 for the Carrera Cup Scandinavia. The second and third numerals are the original starting numbers with which the individual cars contest their respective series. Prize money for the overall winner is 11,000 Euro. Second place receives 8,000 Euro, third 6,000 Euro.

'Since its market launch in 1998 we've built more than 2,200 units of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup which are fielded in 20 one-make race series worldwide," says Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport. 'With the Porsche Carrera World Cup on the Nordschleife, we want to offer our brand trophy series customers worldwide another highlight."

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Nick Tandy hopes for first win of the season

Nick Tandy tackles the Porsche Carrera World Cup as the leader of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup. Driving for Konrad Motorsport, the Briton has notched up three second places this season, but is now hoping to bring home his first victory from the demanding Nordschleife. Last year's vice-champion has prepared himself well for the race, however the three winners of this season are experienced Nordschleife pilots: For his teammate Christian Engelhart, winner of the season-opener in Istanbul, the Eifel circuit is no less familiar turf as it is for Barcelona winner Sean Edwards of Abu Dhabi by tolimit and the VELTINS Lechner Racing pilot and reigning Supercup champion René Rast, who dominated at the Monaco round.

Jeroen Bleekemolen from the Netherlands is also very much looking forward to the Porsche Carrera World Cup. 'This race is a great idea," says the two-time Supercup winner driving for the Abu Dhabi by tolimit squad. Bleekemolen has yet to secure a victory this season. 'If you want to be seriously fast on the Nordschleife you need to be gutsy. But that's exactly what race drivers love. For me, this race marks the greatest challenge of the year."

Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland: Ideal start to the season

Unlike in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, Nick Tandy has already notched up one win from the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland this year – the points' leader kicked off the new season perfectly with victory at the season-opener in Hockenheim. Jeroen Bleekemolen has also enjoyed a promising start: Competing for the Deutsche Post by tolimit team, the Dutchman won his home race in Zandvoort. His compatriot Jaap van Lagen (Land Motorsport), winner at Spielberg, and Denmark's Nicki Thiim (Hermes Attempto Racing), who last weekend celebrated his first Carrera Cup victory on the Lausitzring, are all determined to earn more championship points at the Porsche Carrera World Cup.

Despite not having notched up any wins yet, Germany's seasoned campaigner Uwe Alzen (PZ Aschaffenburg Uwe Alzen Automotive) belongs to the circle of favourites to win at the Porsche Carrera World Cup, thanks to his extensive Nordschleife experience. Another race favourite is the Schnabl Engineering pilot from Austria, Martin Ragginger. 'I've already driven the Cup-Porsche on the Nordschleife and the handling of the car is very good," says Uwe Alzen, an authority on Porsche one-make race series. 'It's going to be tight amongst the front-runners and facing so many good pilots at the top will be a tough nut to crack."

Historic pole position for Norbert Siedler

Norbert Siedler takes up the eagerly anticipated premiere of the Porsche Carrera World Cup on Saturday on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife from pole position. At the fiercely contested qualifying session that delivered suspense from start to finish and determines the grid for the greatest Porsche race in history with competitors from 25 countries, the Austrian planted his VELTINS Lechner Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on pole. Just 0.403 seconds shy of the fastest qualifier came his team mate René Rast (Germany) on the second grid spot. Third went to VERVA Racing team's pilot Kuba Giermaziak from Poland with a gap of 0.63 seconds.

Changes at the top came thick and fast in the final 15 minutes of the qualifying on the legendary Eifel circuit. RenਠRast, the reigning champion of the Supercup, seemed to have the top time under his belt. His arch rival from Britain Nick Tandy (Konrad Motorsport) lay in second place. But then Norbert Siedler put in a perfect lap shortly before the end of the session, with Kuba Giermaziak following suit, effectively relegating Nick Tandy, the current points' leader of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, to fourth place on the grid. The third row is occupied by Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland pilot Nicki Thiim from Denmark (Hermes Attempto Racing) and Christian Engelhart from Germany, who has already yielded a victory for his Konrad Motorsport squad at the season-opening round of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup in Istanbul. Sean Edwards from Great Britain (Team Abu Dhabi by tolimit) qualified seventh, with Germany's Lance David Arnold (Motopark Oschersleben) in eighth. The seasoned campaigner of Porsche makes cup, Uwe Alzen from Germany (PZ Aschaffenburg Uwe Alzen Automotive), and Frenchman Nicolas Armindo (Hermes Attempto Racing), the reigning champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, rounded off the top ten. The fierceness of the competition for the top grid positions was shown in the fact that less than ten seconds separated the first 17 positions on the 25.358 kilometre Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

In the VIP-car of Porsche AG, New Zealander Craig Baird, the most successful Porsche Cup pilot worldwide with 109 wins in Porsche brand trophy series, claimed the 31st spot. America's Melanie Snow, the only female in the field, moved up the field in the VIP-car fielded by Porsche Cars North America to rank 84th.
