Hello all, this is my first post here and I would like your assistance and valuable advice so i can (hopefully) purchase this 3.3L turbo dream car!

Some of these questions may sound naive to you but i am completely new to everything vintage Porsche, seeing as I have been a keen VW/Porsche fan for a very long time now and have been into restoring old VW's at present.

I have recently been to a classic cars and antiques show here in Cyprus and have found a 1984 3.3L turbo originally imported from the UK approx. 5 years ago.

I have been in touch with the current owner and got some information I would like to verify (please see attached pictures in next post):

1. What are the likely faults to look out for on a 3.3L turbo? I have heard horror stories about the turbo cracking or oil leaks and so on. Are those isolated cases of engine abuse or simply not far from the truth?

2a. This particular example has 'RUF' exhausts, though i cannot find any on the internet - is that true or?

2b. It also has, according to the owner, original GT2 wheels (don't know which one? 993 or was there a 964 as well?) which apparently cost £1000 each? Do these look genuine?

3. The car has been sitting around for around 3 years since the owner has a 993 as well. Are there issues to look out for? I have not heard the car running nor driven it, simply saw it at the show. I have no info on the mileage of the car either.

4. It has had a full repaint, engine reconditioning in 1999 (in UK) and a new leather interior added. As far as i know the interior is tip-top, and the owner also has the original air-conditioning unit (much needed in Cyprus) although currently not installed.

5. Finally, the asking price: €30.000 on the road. How reasonable is that considering the above?

Thank you very much for considering all this hope you can help!! :)

NB. Pictures in next post!

Well first thing welcome, it looks like there are a few stock items missing Fuch wheels, steering wheels not the right one. The dash has those chrome rings around the clocks. It looks like a few things have changed from the stock items on the car. You could have a leak test done to check the engine out.

At £30k you are looking at top money for a 930. Which should be near or concourse condition and IMO stock.

You need to look at the paper work top end been done , service history .
Overall condition inside and out the seats does not look not stock either.

These bits all add up, as most people now want stock 930's these days.

The four speeds are selling for around £20k-£25k a five speed between £25k-£30k .

It you still want the car go for a test drive, and if you still want it have a PPI done. Also have a HPI report done as well.

If you wanted to put all the stock, bits back in the car it would cost you ££££ . You have to remember these cars are now over twenty years old they cost money and have to be looked after .

I do low miles in mine less than 3000 a year it still gets a service each year. I had the big one 12000 miles done two years ago cost £650-£850 the small service cost around £200-£300.

Goodluck let us know what happens.

Thank u very much for this swift reply and for ur welcome. I will go see the car tomorrow morning and hopefully take it for a test drive and determine whether it is a 4/5 speed model.

I would appreciate it if u could direct me to a comprehensive list of all 911 models with all specifications as all i have found after hours of searching are some overview buying guides with very scarce information. If it helps i mean similar to the vast databases available for golf mk1s.

In addition, are there any recommended repair manuals on the 930?

I understand that most buyers are now looking for fully stock 930s but as with many other cars most have had mods carried out on them regardless of whether these are on the car when offered for sale. I would just like to buy the car in good working condition and any repairs within reach are not a barrier to buying for me personally. However, if its been crashed into that would be major and would stop me from buying.

The other alternative would be a 1980 3.0 targa turbo look at €17.500. If ud like to advise me on that optioni could easily upload those pictures even though it doesnt fit into this section of the forums  :D

Hello again the car will be a four speed only five in the last year of production 89.

When I did the reseach for mine they said go for the later models 87-89 .

As all the extras were on the car by them.

These cars can do 90mph in second gear so they are quite fast even today.

My 930 buddy "See Ya" is perfectly right in what he says. I have the 5 speed 930. The exhaust system looks non standard too, mine has twin pipes on one side only.
There also appears to be 2 extra instruments in the centre of the dash (if i am reading correctly through the side window shot)
Could be that the whole dashboard is new, i wonder why because the original is fantastic. The steering wheel is a post 1990 model, having said that i never thought the correct one that I have in mine is very impressive.
One thing you didn't mention, or I missed, was what mileage is it?
Mine is just under 50K so thats why i have still got an original car.

From the photos it looks fantastic, the red ones are usually "Guardsman Red". This one looks a bit orange but maybe thats the lighting.

In my view a Targa Turbo lookalike would be a poor second.

Do you agree "See Ya"?

Anyway if it drives well then see if you can drop them on price, it does seem a tad expensive for a non original.

Good luck! :thumb:

See if you can find out who was the owner of the car before it was imported and phone them to see what history you can find out.

Also, perform an HPI/Experian check using the car's UK reg number (before it left the country) - it can be done on the internet for not much money.

Also, see if you can find a Porsche specialist in Cyprus who can look the car over for you - they may be able to tell if it has been crash repaired and also tell you if any bits will need doing eg top end engine rebuild.

Yes spot on, there are a lot of blanks about the car you need to find out first. Also a 930 is a car that needs money spent on it, mine has been serviced more than it needs to.

Also why are you buying the car, is it like me the type you always wanted ?. Maybe a few people, now are looking to buy now as a investment to make a buck on later.

I looked at 12 930's some fives some fours speeds, and some at silly money.

I bought on condition, mine has done 96000 87 model but its had the top end done 20000 back loads of history bills invoices etc.

Its a good solid base 930 which is what I wanted in the first place.
I work on it myself to keep the bills down plus its my hobby old cars.
The service it goes to a Porsche tech he does the work on it .

Also like I said before these cars, are over twenty years old you have to remember that .

Many people are now looking, for that classic 911 look these days.
I know of one for sale in black for around £15k 86 model I think.

GOODLUCK

Hello all once again. I would like to begin by thanking u all for the time u took to reply to my post and provide me with valuable insight as to whether or not this would be a good deal after all. I would also like to apologise for taking a long time to reply as i have been extremely busy with work during this past few weeks (due to the nature of my job and timing of the year heh).

I eventually decided to go with the "dont buy the first one u see, shop around" advice. This was the best option due to many of u being right in identifying that many original parts had been missing and though it may look impressive at first glance, it is not a classic car for a collector (which is my main purpose in looking for one) unless everything is OEM. although i recognise this may not be the case for 99% of the 930s out there, and this was in tip top condition, i could not afford to spend 30k in the end and not be absolutely certain that no more would be needed, as someone correctly identified the vast amount of money u need to spend to maintain these cars.

So there u have it and heres to hoping i made the right decision:) i was really sad for having to let it go as it was perfect in so many ways, however i think it was the wisest choice.

Will be keeping u all updated if another one happens to cross my way here in cyprus, as it would probly be a uk import! Who knows, i may be looking to buy one of yours one day ;)

Again thanks all for your help, truly appreciated!

Have you thought of looking through the UK classifieds (here, Pistonheads, Autotrader and eBay) and then importing it yourself ?

Yes of course i have, the only issue with that would be that id have to find a really good one and i could only evaluate that through the photos provided. The rest i would have to look at myself and preferably have someone in thr uk who specializes in these cars to verify that for me. This is a pretty difficult thing to actually do, however im always looking at the classifieds u just mentioned in case something turns up:) not in such a huge rush at the moment, after posting the pics i realised that looks arent everything and proper research is the way to bagging a good car, as with everything for that matter!
