Hi Guys,

I've decided to sell my Alfa Romeo Brera and buy a 911 in the next few months but there are so many different models/options I'm getting confused and would appreciate some honest and down to earth advice please.

After a bit of reading (911 & PW) and looking at the classifieds I'm drawn to the 996 Carrera 4S but would appreciate any feedback you'd care to share.

Key points are: it must be a 2+2 Coupe with manual gearbox and cost less than £30k. I look forward to your comments and can't wait to own my dream car.

Cheers
Steve

With 30K personally it would be a 997, prices are in freefall, but theres way way lower to go, thats the only problem.

When you compare 996/997 IMHO the 997 wins hands down, 4S 996 is nice though, but with that budget at this time of year your in 997 terratory.

Is it daily driver or second/third car? Would you consider going back further than 996?

Hi

I would look at a 997 also. That is not to denigrate the 996 and especially the 4s, it is just that your budget allows a 997.

With £30k I too would go the 997 route but if you've already considered that option and plumped for the 996C4S you should be looking for an 03 or 04 with full psh and reasonably low mileage and buy from a specialist with a decent warranty.

For £30k you'd get a pretty ordinary 997 and lose £6-7k over the next couple of years in depreciation whilst a £28k C4S might only lose a couple of grand a year as they're well thought of and there's less of them around.

Good luck with your search.

Thing is, with £30K available, you're very close to 996 Turbo territory which is the 4S with the go, not just the show :)

I can't see Turbo's dropping much further than £30K and you've got a much more special car. I know what I'd do.

996 Turbo ! :worship:

Welcome to 911uk BTW :bye:

:?: I'm not sure how much of a Turbo you'd get for £30k. Certainly not one that I'd consider for my first taste of 911.

175mph performance and 0-60 in just over 5 seconds is plenty for most people :judge:

It got old for me after about a year. I don't feel driving a GT3 will ever get old :D

How about £31K for a 2003 manual Turbo with a nice spec from a dealer?

Wow  , fair do's Nick. That's the best value Turbo I've seen but I'm still not sure I'd overspend my £30k budget on a 7 year old car with that mileage when I could get a current shape 5 year old, lower mileage car for less.

That's the great thing about 911s, there's so many different choices around to cater for every individuals personal preferences.

To the original poster (and any 911 virgin) I'd warn about getting carried away with things like 'mph for your £' and stick to what suits you best.

I don't know why people get so hung up on mileage; after all, we're not Ferrari owners :floor:
As Henry @ 911Virgin is fond of saying, the real killer is the amount of work the car has done, not the miles per se; buy on condition. I know that back in the day when I was a lad, most (normal ie. Ford, Leyland etc.) cars were scrap by the time they'd got 100K miles on them but things have moved on considerably since then.

Assuming the car has been regularly serviced there's no reason to suspect a standard Turbo is going to cause any worries for many tens of thousands of miles yet. The worst that you could expect is the suspension needs replacing at some point or a clutch will be required. Buying a newer car won't necessarily shield you from those costs.

Personally, I think the 996 Turbo is an absolute bargain right now.

Stick with the Brera! Quite possibly one of the most beautiful cars to grace our roads today. If you can get the ProDrive S package to go on yours wouldn't that be a great little addition?

Just my leftfield suggestion.
