High Mileage 993 Turbo

Hi
I've just sold my Lotus, i'm going to look at a high mileage 993 Turbo next weekend which is for sale at a specialist, it's been maintained to a very high standard and had new turbo's and clutch a couple of years ago. The specialist have been very up front and said that they've identified that it could do with a top end rebuild in the future, you wouldn't notice but it is evident.

The car has around 130k on the clock, would this be a crazy proposition, i reckon i'll be doing 1-2k a year and intend to keep the car for many years so in time it will level out a bit more.

Would this sort of miles put you off of a car like this?

It's in the low £30k's

Obviously it's not a car that's going to be particularly cheap to run, i'm aware of this and am happy to budget for this.

I would imagine that it wouldn't suffer much depreciation.

Thanks

It either needs a top-end rebuild or not(probably does) and you are looking at £5k to do it right. That makes it a 36-£38k car with 123k miles.

Personally speaking I'd walk away unless it was circa £27k and the rest of it was in good nick as these babies can be expensive.

Hi

I do not think that there is anything wrong with what you propose at all. It just has to be at the right price though. Has to be. At the right price it could be a match made in heaven.

If money is not an issue then spend more and get a lower mile one that has been well looked after instead.

You have to be able to price in the top end and a few other bits to make the proposition work. It may never need a top end given the future mileage you are going to do, but the numbers have to stack up.

Do not be scared to walk away.

Thanks for your comments, that's the main point it's got to be the right price.... i won't know until i see it but is £38k after rebuild the right price when you can get one with 63.5k on the clock for £43k.... problem is i haven't got £43k ...... so this gets me the car and can do things over time if the right starting price.

Those miles wouldn`t put me off.

My turbo as over 130k but i`ve spend £20k in the last 18mths getting it perfect.

However the "specialist in question" would put me off buying it.

It either does or doesn`t need a rebuild, but whatever you do, don`t let them try and rebuild it.

Is it still on factory suspension. That`ll need replacing so factor in £2k+ for that as your`ll no doubt need wishbones at the same time.

What condition are the following in;
Discs and pad
Bodywork
Interior

Personally I`d avoid this one.

Sounds to me it needs to be sub £30k or walk away.

Easy to spend £10k+ and then when you've finished you've still got a car with high miles that will be difficult to sell on - but if you intend keeping it it's worth spending the money provided the initial price is right.

(That last bit sounds like Bruce Forsyth - Come on Down :thumb: In fact we could all play the cliffhanger game guessing how much it will cost to sort :dont know: )

Hate to say it, but when buying a 911 you have to think what the next owner will want !

You need to ask yourself how many people are going to want a 150,000+ mile 993 in a few years.

£10-15k can be blown to get her up to scratch !

When not wait and look for a 90,000 car that should be not too much more?

What's your budget ? I may know of a chap selling a 993 TT with 85(ish)k and I think he wants £36-38k !

I don't know him at all, just came across the car forsale.

I dont know about 993T pricing, so cant comment on that aspect. However, dont forget that if you buy this and get it rebuilt immediately then you will have a 'new' engine. If a car needs work, I always think its best to do it asap, so then you can enjoy it, rather than doing it for the benefit of the next owner.

I've thought about it, including loosing sleep last night. I'm going to probably have to leave this one, i'm too uncomfortable with the unknowns and for me the figures don't quite add up.

I'm going to take a step back, the original idea was to get something Jan/Feb... i'm going on holiday in November and will be drunk in December so i'll use this period to research, i'll sit on the beach reading 911 magazines.

I'm the worlds worst person to have cash burning a hole in my pocket, i remember when i got my first Lotus, i was driving past the showroom, stopped and an hour later i had a new car, about a month later i realised i'd bought completely the wrong model/ year etc. I should learn from my mistakes.

If something comes along at a good price and ticks all the boxes i'll go for it but i mustn't just dive in because there's a space in the garage. As i said i'll only be doing minimal mileage and have a little Renault 172 Cup as a hack and the missus has her car so i'm in no great hurry.

I seem to be drawn towards 996TT at the moment, a guy i know is going to lend me one for a week or so to see how i get on (and see if it fits in the garage...50's breeze block style 2100mm wide), it's got a remap and KW v3 suspension so might not give a true representation.

There is one car that someone on here kindly pointed out to me that looks a good price so i've enquired about that, only bit i'm not sure about is Tiptronic

I think i need to take a deep breath and chill.

PM sent - :)

Was thinking of looking at the same car too. Came to the same conclusion on the price though, it would need to come down loads, but at this time of the year it just might.

Would love to know what Dream911's issues with the "specialist in question" is as I have not been able to find any reviews on them.
