We have the same Bang & Olufsen B&O system my grandfather bought new in 1970 in our Drawing Room, still going strong, serviced last year.

Beomaster 3000-2
http://beocentral.com/beomaster3000-1970s,
Beogram 1800 record deck

and MASSIVE 12" woofer Beovox 3800 speakers http://beocentral.com/beovox3800 (Bought slightly later)

Was stupidly expensive new, BUT exactly 40 years later its still working, sounds great, massive speakers and such solid built.

New B&O is nothing like, it, much flimsier and sound is good but not AMAZING, this was from the days B&O) were real HI-FI as well as style.

For my main system I still use a swiss Revox B-242 Power amp,
http://www.revoxonline.ch/index-endstufen-B242.htm given to me by a family friend when I was 14!
He went bankrupt in early 1990's, he paid £1,800 for it alone, in 1988!! Still going strong, 300watts RMS, and up to 1000watts if its Monoblocked!! :D quality will last!
All 17KG of it!!

I have an '80s B&O Beosystem 5000 stack system which is cool to look at but not the same build!

Remember, as Mr Rolls said - "The Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten..."

Sadly today for a lot of things thats just not true, over engineering does not exist anymore (as a 996 ower!!) ;-)!

Peter Walker, the founder of Quad, was an old friend of my parents, a lovely bloke.

As you say, the stuff was built to last! Dad still has a pre-amp, power amp and FM tuner from donkeys years ago, still doing faithful service. He also has some electrostatic speakers, huge, but phenomenal sound.

He told us that when he started building hi-fi eqpt, he used to build them in his workshop, while his wife looked after sales. At trade shows, if he sold something, they stayed in a hotel, if not, they slept in the car or a doorway!

I also remember him staying when I proudly demonstrated my Marshall valve guitar amp- he could not bear the sound of the distortion as it sounded all wrong to him!
