Who's the smart ar$e now :hand:

I'm gonna guess at 3500 for the UK

From Smart Ars* 2 to Smart Ars* 1. :dont know:
In April 2007 they had produced 100,000 997 of all types in 3 years.
I'm going to gues that total 997 Production of Gen 1 cars will be around the range 140,000 to 160,000. :thumb:
Big Bob :bye:

During the peak the 911/997 was selling around 37K cars a year with 1 in 6 according to Porsche been a Turbo. Last year the sales figure was closer to 20K cars a year with 2007-8 been around 25K cars
So lets say

2004-5 24K (overlap with 996 and not all models were available)
2005-6 ~38K
2006-7 ~38K
2007-8 25K
2008-9 20K (half of them Gen 1 ?

That will give us a total of an estimate of 135K Gen 1 cars..... I will double check the figures as all of them are included in the Porsche annual reports that are publicly available in some kind of shape or form

Great bit of detailed analysis Theo. Well done. I think in the last year there would have been more Gen 1s than 2s. So my guess at 140,000+ was not that bad after all 8)

After going through the Porsche Holding SE annual report (2008) here is a good extract for the UK market.

United Kingdom: Europe's second largest market
Porsche was unable to escape the difficult market
conditions in the UK and Ireland in the year under
review, with a total of 7,169 vehicles delivered (prior
year: 9,104 units). Nevertheless, the UK remained
the second largest European market after Germany.
2,572 vehicles of the 911 series were sold (prior
year: 3,336). The newly introduced Cabriolet variant
was an important factor in the re-newed sales
growth for the 911 Turbo to 676 vehicles, following
the previous record in 2006/07. Sales of the new
generation of the 911 Carrera after the market
launch in July 2008 came to 166 vehicles.

Also here are the official figures (slightly different to the ones we quoted as its not a proper calendar year but end result is the same). Also its worth noting those are production figures and not sale figures. The official sales figures are lower but as we know is a grey area what is a Sale so I would stick to the production ones.

One interesting note going through the report is that Porsche are saying that 1/3 of the 2007/2008 car production were Turbo,GT3,GT2 which tells me that they are not as rare as we though...

Theo

ps: Report has all sorts of interesting figures. IF anybody else is doing his MBA will be a good case study.....

Do you think Theogeor, that the UK data on the 997 Gen 1 production could help us in the analysis of why a higher than expected percentage of 997 Engines failed for Nikasil Lining erosion. Can we get any deeper into the figures from your data sources say down to engine build dates for the UK?

A very good and valid question. From statistical point of view we might start creating a picture of the UK market and when we start correlating that with engine failures we might come to some kind of a conclusion. We already know that between 2006-2008 about 5K 911 were sold in the UK and I believe between 2005 to 2008 a total of no more than 9K 911 have been sold. (will go through older reports and verify that) From the Porsche figures around 25% of the cars were Turbo,GT3/GT2 so standard Gen1 cars should be around ~6500. If its true that we had 40+ engine failures then that is almost 1% which is too high.
Only way to find out is to do a proper survey and see what is the real picture. We might unearth as well the real reason why we have such a higher number of engine failures... Is it related to the fuel supply problem 2 years ago that caused a cascade of events??? Is it a combination of other things???
For me is more about proving or disproving the issue As I always say during my business dealings I prefer to talk with facts rather than speculate!!!
