My 1st porsche - purchased last month - 3 year old 4s 35000 FSH.

2 weeks ago heard tapping noise in line with engine speed so , having purchased a warranty separately (as it was a private sale) took my pride and joy to a high performance sepcialist garage - just in case!!!!

Feedback so far - is that its not tappits and the sound is an unknown based on their experience - porsche have been consulted and a new engine looks a high possibility!! Further research tomorrow.

Have just checked my warrantly to find a 5k max claim in the small print also.

Not a great month or 1st porsche experience - anyone had similar noises or experience?

Thanks

Brillo

So sorry to hear this, I would speak to Porsche UK. If the cars has a full OPC service history they maybe able to help out.

Welcome to 911uk by the way, wish it was under better circumstances.

Keep us to date on how you get on.

Yep...that will be me

So....be interesting to see the outcome for us both....

Thanks for the sympathetic response and welcome to the forun albeit in these circumstances - (was going to join anyway!)

Big fish - did Porsche UK get involved ? Do you have any good contact numbers etc in case I need the,?

Thanks

Hi Brillo, sorry to hear of your problem.

I know mine wasn't a 997.

I had a 2005 996 C4S one of the very last and it started the same way as yours sounds until it went bang. Complete engine change under warranty, intermediate shaft went. It was £12k I believe but there are specialists out there that can do the job for half but it wont be new from Porsche that's all.

Mine was Tiptronic and no engine leaks or RMS problems, only had 13k and 12 months old when it went. So it can happen to anything.

At least you've got the 5k warranty to help out if worst comes to worst. Good luck with it mate.

Brillo

I will send you a pm...still waiting news from Porsche ..... will call me tomorrow

My worst fears!!!!!!!

Got the call today - we know what it is, used a camera inside the engine and its the piston rings , No. 4 and its had it.! Rebuild or replace.

Only suprise is the lack of difference between a rebuild and a new engine , only £400....

£8300 rebuild all in £c8700 new engine with 2 year porsche warranty.

Needless to say verfying the 5k contribution from warrantywise tomorrow.

Great 1st Porsche experience but hey you only live once!!!!!!!!!!!!

brillo, some of the cost is labour. Keep going with Porche GB as they have a track record of assisting in the cost especially if it is their reputation at stake. Also ask if the Porsche garage can help with the cost, again they (depending which one of course) have known to help. Good luck. You never know if you may be able reel some of the excess above your 5k warranty so that for little money you could end up with a new engine

Good luck with that Brillo. I bought a platinum (I think - it was the top one) waranty from WarrantyWise when I had a Jag. The radiator blew a seam and so the garage contacted them for authority to replace it.

Here's the "Good" bit...

WarrantyWise's small print says that if a component "Improves" your car, they'll knock off a percentage of the component cost.

I suggested that a replacement for a knackered rad hardly constitutes an "Improvement", but they wouldn't have it. They knocked IIRC 40% from the new rad's cost.

In your context, in a rebuild, the lion's share of the work's probably labour, so you might find that the withheld 40% of a new pistion might amount to a lot less than 40% of a new engine.

Just one to watch. Caveat Emptor

Best of luck anyway :thumb:

engine failure

Its a little concerning all this engine failure it is so apparent that there is a manufacturing /design problem with these engines without any shadow of doubt. The warranty business is so wrong you should not need a warranty because the engines likely to let go at any time especially well driven cared for examples being at risk. Sorry about your bad luck glad youve got some support, at least youll have some peace of mind. It concerns me though and troubles me more than I would like it to. Mike C4S cab

Thanks for the comments re warranty wise and your experiences.

Assessor due out tomorrow so still waiting - however the key element of warranty wise sales pitch was that they do not take into account betterment..

"Warrantywise does not charge you for betterment. If you really need a complete engine, or gearbox - you get a complete engine or gearbox"

Lets see how it plays out..

Hi Brillo, sorry for your problem not a happy start.
I'm curious on how a camera could show a failed piston ring, as the camera cannot access the ring grooves. What it could show is a scratched bore that might point to a failed ring or rings. Did they also run some compression tests to validate the concern. Failed compression rings will point to low compressions especially on Cylinder no 4, while a failed oil control ring (s) would present with a lot of blue smoke etc. on drive etc.

I'm just asking these questions to be sure that you have an accurate diagnosis before a new engine is the solution.

Ask the question about compression tests on the 6 cylinders.

Best Regards Big Bob

Brillo - I am sorry to hear that. From other forum (French and German) I think this is a common issue on the early 997 although I suspect this affects only a very small number of cars. I may be wrong but I do not think you should expect Porsche GB to do anything as this would create a precedent and they know this. Assuming that Porsche UK will not contribute to the costs, if you have the cash I think you should get a new engine and pay the difference from the £5K you will get from the warranty. If not it is worth having the engine rebuilt - I heard that there is a very good indie specialised in this kind of things (I think they are called Harfield - I am not sure of the spelling though)

There's 2 places you can go for reconditioned engines. Autofarm in Oxford and Hartech in Bolton.

Both are very good and would come highly recommended. Not sure about Autofarm, but Hartech replace the intermediate drive shaft and seal liners with stronger components (I believe they use the same seal from the GT3, but might be mistaken...it's certainly thicker and stronger though).

I'm not sure if they do the 997 engine yet, but it will only be a matter of time.

You can also consider breakers, such as Porsch-Apart and Douglas Valley.

Personally, I'd go down the new engine route and use the contribution from Warrantywise as a contributor.

The way I would look at is that you get a 2 year warranty and whilst it's not the entire 'bumper to bumper (what a joke)' used car warranty from OPC, it certainly does cover the most expensive asset and in which case, I'd not bother with the extended warranty for two years.

This will save you £2800, plus the Warranty Wise contribution, plus some goodwill from OPC/PCGB, will probably mean that you're not out of pocket!!! :)

Best of luck.

Cheers,
GD
