Or get them to put it through the 111 point inspection and you pay for the warranty

Either way you will have more confidence and shouldn't be in for any nasty surprises.

If it is a genuine bargain and the price reflects the number of owners then great, if not you will have potentially saved yourself a fortune......

The number of 'True' owners should show up in the documentation with the car,

I agree with RealSally, when I got my car the logbook showed 6 previous owners, in reality it was 3, who each put a private plate on it then removed the private plate when they sold it,

I figured this out just by reading the customer name on the service invoices etc.

I'm not saying this is the case for this car, but it could be, and its easy to verify.

4 out of 5 previous owners of my car [10yr old] had personal plate changes and it still states 5 prevoius owners. I don't think the DVLA add more owners except by mistake, but three times??

The number of previous registered keepers should never change with a number plate change. However, if ownership was transferred between company and private the V5 will show two owners - even if it is the same address and the same driver of the car (so service invoices will show the same name).

6 owners in such a short space of time would need to be explained in detail to me before I would seriously consider a car that is also extraordinarily cheap.

I have been involved in the retail motor trade for two many years to believe that these sort of bargains really exist: There MUST be a story behind this somewhere...

Get the car HPI'd on the chassis number (not just the Reg. No.) - It may still be on finance on a previous plate? I made this mistake once and the finance company turned up a week later to nick the car back!

How do you know that it has never been involved in an accident when it's had 6 owners? It is quite possible that a repair may have been done without making an Insurance claim - as I said before if someone was driving it with 3rd party cover only (e.g. girlfriend driving home from the pub?)

Why is the guy emigrating? Are you sure he actually owns the car and it is legally his to sell?

Anyway, up to you, but no way would I buy a car that cheap with that many owners unless there was a really convincing explanation.

Just to add my final point on this - I don't think you need to be worrying too much about the mechanical condition of the car (the £10,000 saving will cover most things that may turn out to be wrong), but it is the ownership and provenance that should be your concern...

If you don't thoroughly check this out, it is quite possible (and it happens more often than you would think) you may lose the car and all your money. And if it is a private seller, especially one emigrating in June, you will never get your money back!

My Sister inadvertently bought a 'Ringer' once (stolen car given the cloned identity of someone else's car) and the Police turned up 3 months later and took it away - just like that! Fortunately, she had bought it from a Dealer and they did the decent thing and gave her another car.

You've had enough warnings now, I'm sure you will do some proper research and if everything checks out, enjoy! :thumb:

He certainly has plenty of cash going by his palace in the country....on my way there I noticed an R8 and F430 so I can only hope he has got too much £££ and/or just wants it sold. Is moving to Oz in June so looks to be "clearing out"

Am I missing something here? He has a palace and plenty of cash and yet has been buying a car with 5 previous owners? Doesn't add up in my book ... sounds more like a car dealer that has found a ringer in his stock and the best way of getting rid of it it selling privately ... plus he will be lying on the beach in Oz by the time anyone figures it out. I would approach with caution (actually I would run the other way from what I've read)

If you pick up the latest copy of Evo, there is a report on buying second-hand supercar bargains. In it, Malton Specialist Cars are themselves selling 997 TTs for £55k. Why not check them out?

The re-sale value doesn't really come into play as I don't tend to sell cars. Kinda got a bad hoarding habbit from very young where the older ones just get pushed to the back when a new one arrives, lol.

Will definately look into the HPI check via the Internet etc.

I called last night to see what the script is and it turns out that the dealership is down as a registered owner 3times.....

The car was actually up for sale at the guys local dealership for 4months as they had arranged to buy it from him when they found a seller (which checks out after a phone call)

Problem being that they advertised it for £73,000 but would only offer him £53,000 max trade-in! so he advertised it himself to see if it would move that way.

Guess it checks out when you look at it like that?? Would that be the trade in value??
