997 Oil excessive consumption and sooty exhausts?

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I would be grateful for some advice. I have a 2004 997 Carrera S Tip with 46000 miles on the clock. My problem is excessive oil consumption. The car is currently consuming about 1 litre of oil every 500 miles but there are no leaks?. I have noticed that the left hand side exhausts are very black and sooty compared to the right hand side. I suspect a piston ring has gone.
Has anyone else had this problem and is it a common fault?. I would be very grateful for some advice :?

A litre every 500 miles is excessive you're correct and your feeling about the piston may be right. Presumably your car is under warranty, but in any case get the car to an independent/opc so they can run diagnostics on it. It could be a valve issue perhaps.

I guess the exhaust is still smoking even after a few mile trip then?

Thank you for your reply.

Thankfully the car is under warranty and I will book it into a the specialist that I purchased the car from.

I have not noticed any smoke from the exhaust whilst running, however the left side becomes sooty after a hundred miles or so.

don't want to scare you too much but when the 997 first was launched there were a few problems with engines causing the sooting on one bank.

this problem was caused by ovaling bores which meant the oil would get round the scraper rings and burning it causing the sooting which you witness around the tailpipe and if i'm not mistaken the bumper..

ended up replacing the engines , may be something simple though touch wood

I only brought the car June! If this is what you say, which I hope it isn't! do you think the dealer should have noticed this before the car was sold and is therefore responsible for the engine replacement or should the warranty cover this?

it all depends on how clean the car was when p/x as its not noticable otherwise apart from low oil which could just be put down to normal usage .... did you buy from opc

Exacty the same problem with my 2006 C4S...left side sooting on exhaust...took it to OPC....3 and 6 rings shot to bits...new engine fitted at no cost...drives like new now and seems quicker !!!

Thanks for your reply, you have made me feel a lot better about my situation. :)

Reading thro the post/replies, I can not figure if you actually get "blue smoke" from either exhaust bank under acceleration? I know with the Porsche shape and rear window configuration its not always easy to tell.
Might be worth getting a mate to follow you when out driving.

I gather the exhaust on one bank is sooty, but is it dry or "oily soot". Dry soot - fuel, oily soot - oil.

I believe from other comments from posters that a problem with the engine oil separator can help deteriorate oil consumption.

I have cured problems with sticky rings, by giving the system a good working over with Reddex.

The easiest way to do this with the Porsche layout in the hood area, is to run the fuel right down. Then put in about 10 litres heavily dosed with Reddex and I mean heavily dosed. Then drive. You will get a load of blue smoke out the back then, making sure you work the engine with acceleration and overuns. But dont run out of fuel on the way!

Then refill the tank with fuel to full.

You will get a bit of blue until the Reddex is out of the system.

However you do have the back up of the warranty which is a good reassurance.

Hope that might help.

Big Bob :bye:
