C4 suffering horrific handling!

My 91 964 C4 is handling extremely dangerously and I'm at a total loss as to what's going on.
When driving, it feels like the back end and front end aren't connected! Going round a large roundabout at a motorway at a speed of 28mph, the back end is trying to kick out/steer the front (best way I can describe it!).
It feels like driving in a strong crosswind even when travelling in a straight line. There is no build up to the rear end letting go, it justs snaps and there's no getting it back (already done a 180 spin at 30mph on the roundabout).
Now, it's had 4 brand new Continental N2's fitted, all balanced, brand new springs fitted front and rear, lowering it by about 30mm (then all fully set up in camber/allignment etc.).
Car's been checked over by Porsche Specialist and also even by tyre specialist...still no idea!
This seriously feels like the wheels and tyres have been replaced with trolley wheels!
Any clues???

the fact you've had new tyres, suspension and had the alignment check makes this sound like a very strange problem and worrying problem

one can only assume something has broken but is clearly not evident

Very worrying, as said above given you've checked the tyres and suspension.

Did the Porsche specialist check the transmission- it may be something to do with the 4wd, diff lock?

I tried the diff lock this morning, switched it on, saw the amber light, drove away and it certainly felt like it was behaving normally (sluggish steering, accel) until it auto disengaged at about 20mph.

a fauly diff, now that with the fact you have a 4wd car sounds exactly what you are experiencing

hmmmm what concerns me is why hasn't the porsche guy even hinted at this? I described my problem in MINUTE detail to him, giving accurate descriptions of everything but at no point did the subject of diff come up!
Is there something wrong with the way I've described my diff lock operation earlier that sounds like it's not working correctly? Or is there some other way to ascertain if it's working right?

tbh on a 964 I am not sure, on later cars you can test it by reversing and hearing a noise i.e. no noise is bad

If it's a 4WD issue I can't be of much help (I generally hear that they are VERY reliable). If it's something else, bearing in mind that you've got good tyres and had alignment done, things that spring to mind are;

a serious suspension issue - loose anti roll bar, broken bushings in the control arms or knackered dampers.

Oil dripping onto a rear tyre or petrol dripping onto a front tyre.

I think it would be a good idea (as this is an urgent issue of safety) to also raise your question with a wider audience of 964 experts by posting on Rennlist:

Thanks for all this help by the way! I would be horrified if, in ALL the time the car has been in and out of the garage, that some suspension issues hadn't been seen but there's an interesting bit to the last post about oil on a rear tyre. In addition to all the servicing/suspension work... when the oil filter was changed, the guy slightly twisted the oil cooler pipe under the rear wheel arch. This resulted in having to purchase a new oil line from the filter around the wheel arch to the thermostat(?) which sits inside the driver's side sill at the front of the rear wheel. After THAT was fitted, a slight "weep" appeared at the thermostat join...I could also describe the car like driving on black ice and I immediately got the tyre guy to check all tyres for any signs of oil on the tread (he couldn't find any) but this could be another avenue. On my drive though I can't see or detect any oil but like I say...ANY pointers are helping me. (also just registered with Rennlist right now but may have to wait till later on to copy this thread across!)

Yup, checked them this morning before going on a little run. It's on 17 inch Cups and showed 34-36psi all round. Just read that link and have to agree about some of the things the guys were saying.
I purchased two rear Continentals first (same story as other guy! Just had major service and thought fronts were fine!). All four tyres were Continental N2's so I thought things would be ok. Car immediately felt a bit "nervous" or "twitchy" and on garage's advice bought front N2's within 2 weeks.
Car has never been really right since then but I just can't pinpoint when this desire for the back end to squirm out started. I can't drive it now, as it's the scariest car I've ever been in!

did you get the diff checked yet ?

Logic alone would dicatate that with drive to both ends being out of sync in any manner, would produce bizzare handling results.

Good luck

Don't forget that with dry sump systems you won't see an oil leak when it's cold. I'm not familiar with the 964 system, but most cars with an oil cooler have a thermostat in the system, so if it's a leak in the cooler pipe you'll only see it when the engine's hot.
