What is a 965 Turbo?

there were a few very late 964's with more 993 machinery, apparently

Turbo S's were the last of the last IIRC

To clarify, as a 965 owner ;-)

The 1991 and 1992 (although mine is registered Jan 93) was a 3.3 using the old 930 engine (300bhp) although bigger intercooler and turbo giving 320bhp. it was officially known as a 964 turbo. The 3.3S was a rare beast made in 1992(or 93?) and had lightened panels and tuned engine 381 hp. It cost around double a standard 3.3!

In 1993/94 the 964 turbo was updated with the new 3.6 engine and had 360bhp. Around 1000 were made worldwide compared to 3000 of the 3.3 version (around 5% of both models for the UK, that's less than 50 3.6's and 150 3.3's). This later model is indeed referred to as the turbo3.6.

AKA the turbo2, to differential from the original 930. Not many people use this term now.

Incidentally, Porsche made some special 3.6S's and many were flatnoses, but some with standard headlights. Power up to around 400bhp but not lightweight like the more extreme 3.3S.

Of course you're right that the 965 was an aborted supercar project, but many owners, fans, and garages call the 964turbos 965's. Sounds good doesn't it?

PS: Here is my 3.3, slightly modified.
