996 Major/Minor Service

My car has FPSH up to now. I live in SW London and my nearest OPC is Chiswick. Anyone who has been there will know why I am going to Parr from now on, apart from for warranty work. I used to go to Hatfield to see Sid, but its a 3.5hr round trip (7hrs to drop & collect!). I know that moving to an Indy might put off some future purchasers, but I refuse to give Chiswick my hard earned cash and Hatfield is too far. Losing the FPSH shouldnt be a major issue in my view - anyone disagree?

Wagonface. I'm using Colchester and they will collect and deliver you car FOC. Also you get a porsche loan car for the duration. They also seem very fair.

The price difference is the labour.
Minor in 1.5 hours + oil + filters = £327
Major is 3 housr + oil + filters = £500 ish then plugs and other bits on top. Extra is the assumption that the engine comes out. No idea why they price it this way.

Labour for what though!?!

What happened Wagonface? I live in Chiswick and would have taken my car to them but you're scaring me now.....

They just aren't very good mechanics... which is something I look for in people who look after my car! I had 2 experiences with them where they couldnt find the problem I had. One was electrical and they tried to convince me a 120mA drain was perfectly within range. I gave it to a Porsche specialist electrician who found 3 reasons the drain was high and got it down to 20mA, admittedly after a lot of investigation. I also had it on good advice from a senior Porsche mechanic who is on this forum that they dont have any skilled technicians anymore - most are ex other marques and not Porsche born and bred (although no doubt have been on a course).

This might be controversial but I also think the people they employ are more suited to dealing with vauxhall customers than Porsche owners - especially the girl in the service department who once answered the phone singing 'Barbie girl' (badly) and another time picked the phone up, shouted "get me 20 lambert & butler" to someone else and then said Hello.

Whenever I have contact with them I cant help but feel I am about to get fleeced, and my wallet seems to bear that out. I only go there for warranty work now. Maybe give them a chance with a simple service and see how you get on? I definitely wouldnt let them investigate anything else (unless under warranty).

You should change OPC mate, as they are not all like that!

Wagonface - WOW!! You have certainly put me off taking my car there for a service. I may as well go down the indy route. I am sure a service stamp from Parr or Paragon is almost as good as getting a stamp from an OPC.

According to an OPC - a minor service is oil but not the filter. Major adds oil and air filters and a lot of checks of things - but no replacements. I don't call servicing something having someone look round it!

Maxie - its just my experience, and as others on here will testify, not all OPCs are like that (Hatfield aren't, cos I get Sid to take care of me and he's great - just a shame they are so far away). And Rawhide says Colchester is good too. Maybe I just had bad luck. Costly (£ and time) bad luck.

Ditto, that I'm in West London and dont use West London, so getting to Hatfield is a treck which is worth while but a major inconvenience and it shouldn't be

the best part of West London is Vincent in the Parts dept who is a Porsche Parts Legend !

And same here. west London by far closest, and tbh did not have a bad experience with them when they did a service on my car. in fact they found rad probs and replaced under warranty without any hassle.

However, i have met Sid, seen his work and trust him. that is very important to me and similarly i have used the same ex-vw mechanic on my golfs for as long as i can remember. That for me is worth the added inconvenience, but would be handy if Sid transfered back to WL!
