wheel alignemnt/Geo help?

Afternoon all,

just fitted EBC red stuff pads all round and whilst doing front drivers side notice that the inside of the tyre is worn unevenly vs the other side front. so a) is this normal (guessing probably not) and b) 4-wheel alignment, best done by specialist or will laser-alignment at ATS do the job (car won't be tracked and is only driven on UK roads)?

Also noticed the car has a tendency to tramline a little more of late, like is following the grooves worn in the road.

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance

sound like the alignment needs checking , if it hasnt been done in the last 12 months then it could be an issue

not ATS or like as they wont have the 'real' tools ! track driving isnt relevant, the alignment for the normal road is important

Ref-the red stuff pads... are they sqealing at low speed? and what do you think of cold braking performance? Its just I put these in my EVO once and took them out after about 1000 miles.... the cold perf or driving in rain (cooled discs) was awful... good on a track though when very hot. Just wondering how they suited 911s...

not really had enough time to comment to be honest roadhog. Rear disc/pads were grooved and needed replacing so new rear dics and pads and new front pads that actually have some stopping ability have made a massive difference. (even the GF commented on how much better the brakes felt).

So far they seem to have a firmer feel and stop more readily than standard OEM pads. I have some squealing issues but i'm 99% certain that the "heat shield" thing behind the disc that may have become mis-aligned due to having to use a little brute force getting the old discs off (even with handbrake off)

incidentally, does anyone know how essential that thin piece of metal between disc and suspension is? seems to flimsy to affect any real heat dissiaption if that its purpose) and too flimsy to protect against anything?

That's an important adhesive anti-squeal shim. Ensures the pad contact area is consistent and stops the pad from vibrating.

I've re-used them in the past but having tried a brand spanking new one the difference was night and day!

re. Red Stuff Ceramics, not a bad pad, I certainly didn't have any squeal on my C4S when using the shims. Plenty of bite and enough fade resistance for fast road use.

Damian I'm not sure we're talking the same thing here, I meant the thin (~0.5 mm) metal "sheet" behind the brake disc between the actual disc and the suspension suspension components. It doesn't appear to have any function other than a barrier or possibly a heat shield/sink.

If you look at the rear wheel its a 5-sided thin piece of metal that protrudes frombehind the disc and is quite malleable (witneesed by it getting out of shape whilst changing discs..)

Does that serve any real purpose? (of course i'm sure porsche didn;t put it there for decoration but its very flimsy and seems to serve no real purpose...)

Sundeep, How is the alignment done? I only ask as the nearest indy is 40 miles away and the local ATS has a new laser alignment tool apparently (my friendly mechanic knows someone there..)

errr maybe, sits about 1cm from the rear of the disc?

(incidentally its about 5 mm think not 0.5mm !)
