Alarm malfunction

Hi, I have noticed twice recently when I have gone to lock the car with the key fob it doesn't - lock it that is!

So I manually lock the car with the key, and then out of curiosity open it - the keyfob works and then straight away again lock it again - this time the keyfob works!!

Could this be as mundane as a weak battery in the keyfob or is it symptomatic of something else?

Try the battery change, it's a standard CR2032, available for under a quid.

Have you tried this key fob top tip...

Hold the key to your chin as you press the button.

Bizzarely, this dramatically improves the range and operation of the alarm remote, maybe using your head as an aerial.

It may fry your brain too, but so far I've not had any ill effects. :(

Thanks Rob, now you come to mention it - I do remember Clarckson demonstrating this a while back - amazing it really does make a difference doesn't it?

Anyone care to venture why it might make a difference to the range?

I'll try Daimian and Sundeep's suggestion first though

I have just come to the end of a similar dilema about key fob working not working alarm malfunction etc.. Naturally key battery first point to exclude but I would suggest that it may be the Key Fob..

I had all sorts of stories from OPC Sheffield, then Reading who had it for a day with no resolution, said it needs new controller (under the seat apparently) then another forum suggested it's very much car battery dependent (a friend had same problem on a 52C2 which was sorted with new battery from Costco). It also seems worse if the car is left for a while as the alarm system goes to sleep to save battery consumption. There's much dialog on this forum about trickle charge/conditioner. A bit of a problem for me as Pink Elephant parking don't have 13amp power point at Heatrow LongStay !!.. So always two weeks away the car has to be opened with the key and reset.

However talking with my indi specialist (Zentrum Nottingham) who said it's a very common problem and the key fob needs changing (£50) They said that if a key lasts 5 years it's done very well.. Since then absolutley no problem.
