Hi there,

Can someone point me to a "what to look out for" guide on buying a 1990 964? I am new to this and am changing my Honda s2000 and really want a good 1990ish 964. What sort of price should I be looking to spend..and should I be looking for something that has already had a top end rebuild etc?

Can folk also give me an idea on how reliable these motors are in general?

Thanks so much,

Adrian (Dublin, Ireland)

There's also loads of info here:

I bought the Peter Morgan Ultimate buyers guide a couple of months before I bought mine.

In all the guides you'll see mentions of, check that the distributor vent mod is fitted, the flywheel has been replaced and head gaskets fitted. In actuality, the cars are so old now that it is 95% certain these mods have been done otherwise the car wouldn't be running any more.

Personally, a top end rebuild was high on my priorities as I was always going to buy a 120K+ miles car because of the lower price they go for. Prices vary widely between £10K and £20K. I guess in Ireland they will also be more than in the UK.

As a new 964 owner the best advice I can give is buy one from an enthusiast and that the car has LOTS of history.

Thanks so much, I will check those links out. I have a few other questions:

I have heard that there is a difference in reliability is quite a bit, the 3.6 being the more reliable. Is this true? How can the 3.6 and the 3.2 be identified if the advert does not say?

Also, The Carerra 2 and 4... what is the difference

Finally...and don't laugh... has anyone ever fitted a baby seat into a 964?

Thanks a million,

Adrian

All 964s are 3.6, the 3.2 is the impact bumper ones, ie the model before, also tough as nail, if not more so. The 964s are more complicated and therefore more bits to go wrong, and cost more to fix. But if the cars are looked after well, then they are all pretty reliable and can go on for miles. Make sure you get a proper 911 specialist to do the PPI before parting with the cash.

Carerra 2 is 2 wheel drive, Carerra 4 is 4 wheel drive

The reality is a bit more wt to lug around, more to go wrong and a smaller boot space in the C4 but you do get better brakes and when buying mine as a daily driver I couldn't shake the idea that the 4 would be more sure footed in dodgy conditions so that's what i bought.

As for the rebuild issue - I bought mine at 75k miles without a rebuild and paid nearly £17k for it - you could argue too much - but it was by far the best one I could find (without shelling out £22k on the last original silver RHD Celebration - which i'm going to regret!)

See as many as possible and you will soon be able to start to pick the good uns out then when you think you've found it - get it PPI'd (repeat as necessary) :)

Someone said that "it's better to journey hopefully than to arrive" - that persons journey was obviously not to buy a porsche but try not to rush and enjoy the hunt
