964 Auto Advice Needed Please!

964 or M3, rather different cars!

Who did the top end rebuild? If you are looking at other 964s which may need a top end, factor in about £5k for a top end rebuild. Car should be good for another 75-100k miles with a top end rebuild (and almost all of the air cooled lumps need them as they approach 90-100k miles).

Good question to ask, the price seems good otherwise.

I am looking for a 964 as well. From what I have read / been told the earlier 964 cars (about 1989/90) could have a problem with engine oil seals, the distributor (needs a breather modification), and the Freudenberg dual mass flywheel. There are "fixes" for all these things but it is worth checking when looking to buy, even as a bargaining tool if not done yet. If you are struggling to find someone to give the car a once over and give you a report, try looking in the back of mags such as 911& Porsche World as specialists do advertise this very service and I think its money well spent. Also look at

Regarding earlier 964s (89,90 and some of 91) the major problem is they have a different piston barrel design with a thin top surface, no head gasket and lower o-rings (black) that perish. The later barrels have a wide top surface, a head gasket and along with updated o-rings (green) fix all these problems but it means a set of six new barrels. Taking an early engine apart and putting it back together is likely to cause head leaks (although you can reduce the likelyhood by having the faces skimmed) and the only long term solution is to fit the later barrels.
