Ignition Coil

As my warranty was expiring I recently took advantage of the £725 price before the increase and am patting myself on my back today.

Having already suffered RMS this year I was out for a Sunday afternoon spin and started to suffer a bad misfire. Out came the RAC and diagnosed the Ignition Coil on no. 3 had gone.

Is this a major job? What'll the cost be? Will the OPC be able to replace it without engine out etc or not? - I'm thinking of whether I should get any other work done at the same time.... (sorry if these questions make any of you laugh, all I know is it's a tight squeeze back there in that bay)

Cheers

coils are easy to replace assuming it can be assessed as there are a few

I'm assuming (via the RMS statement) that the car's a 996, a 996 has 6 ignition coils they are attached to each of the spark plugs, the cost of these are around £40 each.

Not a major job, just a little difficult to get access to that area. What an OPC will charge for the labour is a different matter!

One of my coils went in July-RAC collected the car at 8 am. Merc dropped off at 10 am and the car was ready to collect at 5 pm. No charge for any of it. All under the warranty. (1999 996)

Quite a result there! The coilpacks are a 'wear and tear' item.

Yes I was surprosed too. I dont know whether its unusual but so far I have never even had to ask if something is under warranty. OPC Wilmslow have been really really good.

It really pays to have a good relationship with your dealer, sounds like you have a good one there!

To add my experience to the last couple of posts on this thread.

I too obviously have a good dealer as the car was returned to me with absolutely no charge for the ignition coil.

And to add to the good news - the car was due a service & MOT today which they did a few days early as they had it in anyway, and I received 10% off the total bill as I'm PCGB member (not just 10% of the labour charge as I'd read elsewhere).

Nothing but praise for them

I had the same problem with a failed ignition coil. Took it to my local specialist and they changed all six cause if 1 goes the others are not far behind so i'd recommend you get them all replaced. I'm pretty good with a spanner and I'd normally do a job like this myself but as i'd not long had the car and didn't want to cause any more problems I decided to let the experts do it. Turns out i could have done it myself easily.

Cost me £220 inc parts, labour and vat.

If you look on Ebay, I've seen sets of 6 coil packs go for £30-40 all in, if i'd have known I could have saved myself around £180.

The job itself is quite straight forward but takes time because the coils are not easy to get to. They are located under the car either side of the sump behind a heat shield between the exhaust and sump. 2 torx screws hold each in.
