Hopefully some of you guys can help me with this one...

A few days ago I heard a sound coming from the back of my 996 that I hadn't heard before. At first I thought it was the air filter box leaking (sounded like sucking air) so I ignored it but it's got gradually worse and now sounds more like grinding/scraping metal and it's quite loud.

I kneeled down under the car and it seemed to be coming from underneath in the sump area (oh my god! panic) but i've narrowed it down to the left side, the sound was just resonating through the sump. I phoned a local Porsche specialist who said it could be the water pump failing as this would make the metallic grinding/scraping sound (fingers crossed).

Has anyone else experienced this?

The car runs absolutely perfectly with no smoke and no loss of water or oil so i don't think its engine related although I have noticed the oil pressure gauge starts at maximum in the morning or when cold, then gradually drops to 3-4 but then once nice and warm it can drop to 1 when idle and in between slow gear changes (when the clutch is disengaged basically) is this normal?

It's not under warranty so hopefully it is the water pump and the oil pressure is normal. It's going into the garage in a few days though so I just need your diagnostics before i go.

Thanks!

Oil pressure at 1 is very low. Mine runs at just under 3 when warm and stationary and goes up to 4 - 5 when under load.

The oil pressure readings are fine, mine are exactly like this also although 1.5 when very warm, not as low as 1.

Maybee the fact that it's done 90k has something to do with the oil pressure. It doesn't drop below 1 and goes back up to almost 5 when accelerating.

What about the water pump?

If its a failing water pump watch out - if you have poor water circulation as a result you could be in line for overheating and gasket failure. This is exactly what happened to my mates Audi TT at 17 k miles.

In respect of oil pressure, mine is as low as 1.5 and then straight up to 5 when accelerating.

In respect of your noise, coming from the left side it is most likely the water pump (from my experience only).

Mine went about 2 months ago. The noise (if it is the same as mine) will be a worn bearing. Mine was making the noise intermittantly (due to the fact that when the bearing warms up the noise should reduce) and I thought it may have been an exhaust rattle as the baffles in my left muffler had gone.

One night it got really loud, to the point where by passers were taking a second look at the car (sounded quite sick!). I took a look underneath and no water so I thought I would limp it home. The noise then stopped.

Got home and there was coolant leaking from the water pump area (the hose) however temp all the way home was fine and coolant level was still ok.

Get it checked as there is a little "propeller" which is attached to the bearing and if it comes away can cause some damage to the housing - so I was told.

The water pump is one unit so the whole thing will have to be changed and it will then require a flush of the system and some new coolant.

If it is the issue....

Just thought i'd give you guys an update on my water pump. I decided to replace it myself after OPC quoted £400!!! yea right!

It took me 3 hours and i can honestly say it was quite straight forward and only cost me £125.00

Sounds nice and quiet now.
