I don't understand how some of these specialist dealers have got the nerve to ask what they do (mind you most car salesmen are thick skinned) Ok you get a warranty, usually Insurance backed and they riggle at every oportunity. What else? Not a lot. I would go the private route every time, but have it checked out THOROUGHLY. Buying from a dealer means you have a choice of vehicles, private means doing some leg work but save yourself 5 grand plus.

It always annoys me when people unfairly slate dealers. Most potential purchasers are very well informed about prices etc nowardays so if a dealer overprices a car it usually sits around for months and months and does not sell.If a dealer sells shoddy cars or gives bad service news soon gets round and business suffers(as it should).Even if on a good day a dealer sells a car and 'makes' £5k,he has to pay the vat on the profit as well as all his other overheads, and you would be supprised how little is actually made percentagewise on his initial outlay after everything has been taken out.Yes you do save a little buying privatly, but you have no backup from the law of the land if you buy a rogue car!!

Another dealer are we William. Get your facts right. To slate a dealer unfairly you have to name them and give the reasons why. Mine was purely a sweeping statement.

My facts are right Peter,it is you who is wrong(maybe all that sun in Portugal has made your head go a little funny)I said that you were slating dealers in the plural, which indeed you do.For your information I am not a dealer myself but I am familiar with the motor trade. You are content to buy privatly and there is nothing wrong with that. All I am saying is that a lot of people enjoy the reassurance of buying from a dealer even if it involves paying a little extra.

Regarding the warranty talk...they say that an OPC warranty can be put on a car "Up to 9 years old or 125K Miles". Does that mean that you can put one on a car at 8 years and 10 months for a year, or that all bets are off the second it turns 9??

the last day you can put a Porsche waranty on a car is its 9th birthday

so you can put it on a 8 year 11 month old car and its valid for the next 12 months

I've done it

Thanks for the input Mark. I'm pretty new to the forum and I'm glad to see this hasn't completely decended into any kind of sl*gging match! It would on other furums I have used.

I think the reality is that I have brought cars (not porsches) both new and used from main dealers and have always had good service, sometimes excellent (recent SAAB purchase for the wife is an example of the latter) and I have always felt better about it than I think I would have in a private sale. I guess it is a control thing. There is a certain amount of control with the dealer, they are unlikely to up and move etc. But I do think that I naively think all dealers think and behave like and me. That is how Mark describes himself. Clearly a lover of the car who understands the level of desire and commitment us purchasers have. I've certainly viewed Marks stock and it all looks very nice. Can't afford any of it mind. But to me he is right. I have no way of affording a new 911. All my previous cars have been new and whilst I desire a 911 I want one that has a very 'new' feel and look to it.

Anyway, it seems the answer to my initial question is YES. The extra cost from a dealer can be worth it, it just depends which dealer it is. How much extra is too much. ow that seems to depend on the level of peice of mind required, and that surely is a personal thing. Personally, if I do buy a 911, in order to keep my marriage intact I need as much peice of mind as possible. Any kind a big repair bill soon after purchase is likely to cost me more than the bill!

Piers has summed it up well

Its all down to the personal touch

you either like?, are gratefull for? or want that service, care and attention both to the product and to you or you dont and buy privately and sort the car out yourself

There you go Piers we have helped you to make your mind up. So when you are ready to buy, get yourself down to Cornwall, you could do a lot worse.
This is a friendly and professional forum and although we beg to differ sometimes we rarely end up sl*gging each other off, not seriously anyway (unless your selling high priced stupid personalised number plates).
Good luck in your quest for the ultimate sports car.
Peter
