911 carrera 3.2 is it a depreciation proo

I use mine as a daily driver, its easy to live with, apart from the stinking hot summers in Sydney temps in the high 30's low to mid 40's isn't uncommon.

I'm not worried about adding kms either, regarding depreciation, who cares, the value is in the joy the car brings, and believe me it brings plenty of joy, the most fun one can have with there pants on! and if it needs work doing, its still cheaper than buying new, I dont know about the UK, but in Sydney 996 prices have plummeted its not unusual to see three year 996's drop more than 40% and from what I'm reading around various forums lots of the new Porsches suffer from problems and questionable build quality( sorry dont hate me)

I've owned 1988 3.2's for 6 years total (2 of them) and driven them as daily drivers. Now onto a 964... Turbo2 :)
Without a doubt a very involving drive, so much character, that sound, feel the acceleration, and the steering- what a joy.
Downside: no power steering, only an issue when parking- but works out those muscles. And no aircon (not a problem except when suck on motorway jams in summer!). Maybe try a 964- they usually have air.
Admiring looks from most people, small kids, car appreciating men- and Guy, even the ladies do recognise a classic in good condition (the car I mean, not me!).
You need to decide whether you want the 'one-ness' of the driving experience of a classic 911, or a more modern cosseted ride (and that goes for 996 onwards as well as Boxters).
Running costs, not bad if you find a good one, and use specialists (not OPC's!!).

Mark, great to hear from another 964 owner!! I thought I might be the only one on this forum. How do you get on with the Turbo? I've always been keen to go out in one as I think that's what i'll get next. Whats it like to live with? Do you use it every day? I'm more than happy with mine, love it to bits. Its not too bad to run and up until recently have been using it everyday, even in the winter.

Jays,

Like you I drive my cars daily (nearly).

I loved my 3.2's.

Now I love my Turbo.

When I used to drive the 3.2 I felt that it was without doubt one of the fastest cars on the road.

Now I'm in the Turbo, it's even faster. Frankly the acceleration when the boost kicks in, is BRUTAL! It reaches 3 figure speeds so quickly, you really have to check that speedo (if you just drive on the revs like a 3.2, you're just going MUCH too fast.)

I'd say I got used to the 3.2 and was completely "at one" with it. I need to 'learn' the Turbo. PS: I've only had it for a month and its in the workshop getting all the snags put right, and a few improvements (eg. new stereo, xenons, etc.) I can't wait until it comes back in time for an Easter blast!!

That sounds cooool ,the 993 is my favorite 911,been the last of the air cooled which shares similar DNA with the older models. Are they as slippery to drive like the Carrera 3.2??? I one day hope to own a silver 993 Carrera, just love them to bits.

In Sydney you very rarely see old 911's , its mainly Boxsters and 996 or 997's.

post some photos when you get a chance.

Got any pics then Mark? How much worse is the fuel consumption over the 3.2? I average roughly 20mpg I reckon and with my daily drive of around 65 miles, can be fairly expensive, hence the need for a second car!

Jays, I'll try to load/ link some pics soon. Can't say what my MPG is, but the gauge just goes down as you watch! Certainly not as good as the 3.2 which I'd say was well into the 20's. When I had my first 3.2 I did 24K miles a year, what fun!

Now, I do have a second car, for family stuff (can't get anyone over 4'8" in rear of 911 coupe, slightly better in a Targa as the rear window isn't so steep!).

I've done 16k in the first year of 964 ownership, the best year of motoring ever! I've calmed it down a bit now though because of the miles I was putting on the 964.

I'm currently trying to decide what I should buy as a second car, while i'm deciding i've got a little 106 diesel which I absolutely hate!! No idea what to get yet, don't want to spend a fortune on it. I was thinking of an Alfa Romeo, i've just heard a load of horror stories with reliability though.

Which RS Turbo did you have? I had a Series 1 when I was 18, probably my second favorite car after the Porsche if i'm honest!

I hated my Ford RS turbo, only had it for 3 months- didn't like the torque steer on front wheels. It was a mark 4 I think, the square shape. It did look good, but not classic! Apart from 911's the best sports car I had was the Fiat Coupe Turbo- 1997 in sprint blue. It was in some ways comparable to a 911- looked great, practical inside, and performed great. I heard that the reason Fiat killed it so quickly was because it was too good for the Alfa GTV and was taking its market share- having driven both, I'd have to agree!)

Good luck with second car. I too would hate a diesel- always hated my diesel company cars with a passion! (Now I have an automatic 600 Rover for when I'm lazy or need to take 2 or more passengers. Its comfortable and reliable. And cheap too because of Rover going bust- alot of car for the money)

I think you had the later RS than me, mine was the first one they did. The white one with a blue stripe. Great car, although i'm sure i'd be hugely disappointed if I drove one now! I drove a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo in 1999, I was thinking of buying one. I remember thinking how good it was at the time! My friend had the non turbo version and had a whole world of trouble with it, mainly the dealers doing in my opinion though. Hate to say, but think the Alfa looks better, although I didn't think it was great to drive.

I thought about a Rover 45 purely because you can get them for pennies! I'll have to see, I do prefer the looks of the Alfa, just got to try and be practical here!
