Buying my first 911

Here's where I'm at for you afcionados. I'm 46, have been a BMWCCA member for some time, have owned a number of them and drive a 5-series manual now. I truly appreciate German engineering.

I've always wanted a nice 911. I plan on purchasing an older ('77-'80) 911 in the near future to see what I think of the car. This would be a fourth car, be garaged always and would be taken out primarily on nice days only. I'm not looking for Concour's quality car just a nice, tight clean car to drive.

My question is; If you were going to buy your first 911-911, wanted to spend between $10K-15K USD specifically what year would it be and why, considering reliability issues, serviceability, availability etc..

Jim, welcome. That sort of money would not buy much in rip-off UK. I guess, over here you'd be looking at a pretty tatty car with loads needing to be done to it and huge bills waiting. US spec cars have softer suspension and, thanks to your neighbours (California) naff emission restrictions.. The only thing I can say is have any car inspected by a specialist - whilst this may cost a few $$$, it could save you from that nasty shock in the future.

Thanks for your response. I can find some decent '77 to '79 California/Oregon cars that are fairly well maintained /Documented for about $10-15K USD. My thought was that if I could find a nice "older" 911 it would give me a chance to check out the car, get in inexpensively, then if I liked it (which I'm sure I would) later buy up to a nicer car.

I guess my question is two-fold; Is it reasonable to expect that you can buy and enjoy an older 911, say years '77 to '79 and are those particular years more of a problem car than other years and if they are should I be looking at another year for a better buy? I'll definitely have the car checked out by a specialist prior to purchase as I've done in the past with my BMW's.

Personnaly I cant comment on your questions, however I dont know if youve come across it but there is an excellent Forum in the USA http://forums.rennlist.com/

Whilst the guys here can certainly help on factors in choosing one model year over another the US site is better placed to advise on costs etc.
