Main Dealer v Independent

As in the rest of life, there are good and bad. Just because a garage is an Independant Porsche speacialist does not make them better than main dealer.

But as either, unless you have informed advice, are a gamble. Better to gamble with the 30% cheaper Indy than the OPC. Unless Bob Watson was the option, then I would get a monkey to service it for me..!

On my older 3.2 Carrera I tried a small independent Auto2000 in Kempston, BEDS. Now I have a 964 I realise I shall have to use somewhere with a bit more expertise for occasional services and jobs.

This is because from the 964, Porsche introduce electronic diagnostic checking so any independent would need either a Bosche Hammer (?) or an OPC laptop. These are vital pieces of kit and not the small inexperienced independents like Auto2000 have one.

I would suggest you listen to recommendations and also decide how frequently you intend to get your car serviced/inspected. Engine oil changes may only be required at every 12,000 miles but that would take me 4 years and personally I think moisture and age impacts the lubrication, etc. So I have the oil changed annually (in Spring) and also have a separate inspection (late Summer) generally before the European drives - Le Mans Classic, etc. This suites me because it gives me peace of mind and also spreads the bills for any major jobs.
