Hi, I am due to buy a 964 Carrera 4 this weekend which will be my first Porsche purchase. I am very interested in becoming a member of a Porsche club and would very much like to hear from someone as to which one to join, and what i can expect from the membership.

Many thanks
S Gale

Welcome! Hope you enjoy the new 964 experience...

Porsche Club GB is about £50... you'll get a nice monthly mag which has to be worth at least £35, plus cheaper Insurance and the opportunity to attend lots of events. Long established, professional outfit but some say a little snobby?

There is also The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club which looks good too, but no direct experience of that. Looks a bit more home-made, and possibly geared toward older cars. Ditto for PCGB for benefits I suspect.

Robert.

Guess it depends upon what you are willing to put in to it. Lots of folk are annoyed with the politicing of PCGB and find it difficult to deal with. I went on a trial basis to a TIPEC meeting last year, but think I was the only 993 there and felt like an outsider as everyone else was in 924's 944's or 928's so it is a bit of a water cooled clique.

Looks like PCGB then, for all its foibles...

As with a lot of clubs, there are quite a few types who really should get out more, and/or take themselves and their cars a bit too seriously, but you do come across some genuinely nice people. If your life truly revolves around Porsche, you should find some kindred spirits... :|

Many thanx for your comments. I also forgot to mention that my 964 comes with full OPC history - would it make sense to carry this on for the sake of the service book as I think i would prefer to use a specialist?

GOOD specialist. What do OPCs know about 964s anyway? Good specialist used on a car of this age won't hurt resale.

Agree guys?

Definately better off at a specialist - they have the knowledge, they will be cheaper and a well recognised independent's stamp in your service book is probably better than an OPC's on a car earlier than a 996.

Hi Shaun, if you want to join a club, with a 964, I'd say PCGB. As Richard said, you might feel a bit of a spare part in TIPEC. There are 911's there but majority of them are water cooled front engine Porsches. Like any club, you only get out what you put in. So if you're planning on joining the outings and meetings, write the letters, then either would be great. But if you're a lazy buggar like me, then save your money and stick to forums like this and rennlist to get the info anf Porsches fixes. I did join PCGB last yr just to try their trackdays, might not join again this yr though.

For servicing, I'd go to a well known specialist. OPC probably wouldn't be too interested/care/know about pre 996 911s. I'm sure the more senior technicians are very knowledgable but they won't be the ones working on your car. Of course, there're always exceptions.

Welcome to the best 911 club anyway! Must come to our next curry night!

Thanks once again for your helpful remarks one and all. Having trading in my somewhat more practical M3 after years of drooling over 911s i had to justify the Porsche purchase to my girlfriend... "Honestly, darling, we can join a club, and they have great days out, etc, etc." Thankfully this seemed to meet approval and i get to pick my new car up today - Im so looking forward to it.
Thanks again, will keep the curry night in mind!

Shaun

You will have joined the best club by buying a Porsche!

I tried the same persuasion techniques with the missus when I bought my 964 and didn't get that much enthusiasm from her to tell you the truth. But when we picked it up she sat in it and a bigger smile came from her face than mine. Asked her if there was something stucking up from the seat and got the reply 'everyone's looking at my cause I'm in a Porsche' Typical woman eh?

Have fun, enjoy it, drive it.

Rob

ps - regarding opc vs specialist : go for a specialist, I've found my local opc doesn't really like older cars. Try JZM if it's not to far from you. Never had any issues with their work or advice.
