993 Guage Readings

The oil level guage on my 993 C4 is reading at the bottom of the red, when engine is running. I've checked level with dip stick at normal running temperature, and its perfect! Any suggestions to what problem may be?? :?
Also the Oil pressure indicator is reading off the scale above 5 bar as soon as ignition is switched on! Wondered has anyone an idea of the problem :(

It will be visiting an OPC for an annual service soon, and I wanted to sort problems out to avoid a large bill!!

From a previous post of mine...

Check the oil on the dipstick when the engine is RUNNING at tickover and the oil is HOT - after a good half hour run.
With dry sump systems the guage is only accurate when the oil is hot as above and the engine has been idling for at least 2 minutes. Never overfill!

The guage is on the red line when running because the oil has been sent around the engine to do its job.
Oil consumption varies with traffic conditions and how hard the car is driven. Dont be surprised if it seems to use a lot.

With the ignition switched on prior to starting the engine, my oil pressure guage reading rises slowly to just over the zero level.

I was told the other day by a specialist that the oil level gauges are often inaccurate, reading higher or lower than the dipstick. He said around 1/3 full on the gauge is generally adequate.

He reiterated as said above that it is important that to obtain an accurate reading the engine should very well warmed, and allowed to tick over on level ground for at least a few mins.

Also bear in mind that the oil takes a while to get from the filler to the sump, so only add oil in limited amounts before rechecking to avoid overfilling.

Your oil pressure gauge/sensor sounds faulty though...

The generally acknowledged wisdom on the oil level gauges is that they should be used as guides and nothing more. Proper oil level checks should be done as has been described.

I had an oil level gauge that was reading off the top of the gauge all the time. When I took this in to be serviced I asked them to have a look at what was wrong. Apparently one of the terminals on the sender was corroded and thus was making poor contact, they cleaned the terminal off and all is fine. This is apparently quite common as the rear wheels throw rubbish on it. This was on a Carrera 3.2 but I don't think a 993 is that different.

Might be worth asking an independent to take a look re. both gauges.

Always use the dipstick for a true reading, not the dash guage.

BTW - the difference between the dash guage reading nothing and the dash guage reading full is a very small amount of oil compared with the total amount held within the engine.
