Hi everyone,

I've been surfin on the forum over the last week or so, investigating "this", "that" and "the other", but would still appreciate some feedback on my thoughts-so-far please...

(edited to say...bl00dy useful forum, by the way..useful and relevant info, unlike some other non-porsche forums populated by some right chavs!)

I made the conscious decision a couple of weeks ago to try and realise a boyhood dream of owning a 911...somehow, and before kiddies come along.

I've currently got a Subaru, (STi-5 Type-R) which I have to say I'm delighted with, it's very capable, ballistically quick point-to-point, etc, blah...but the Missus HATES it...with a passion. So, time to start investigating.

I'm definately looking for a 996; this is an everyday car, and although I work from home 60% of the time, when I travel, it's a long round-trip. 993, I think, is in much the same vein as the Scoob, a very "focussed" drive. (I'm not looking to do trackdays in it).

I've found a gorgeous example of exactly what I'm looking for; a C2 coupe, manual (not after a Tip), silver, black leather interior (smooth, not ruffled), 36,000 miles, on an S-plate (so a 3.4) with GT3 Aero-kit and prestine bodywork. Climate and CD also in there. Almost too good to be true, as it's the first car I saw when walking into the Independants showroom (in Surrey).

It's also priced at the top-end of my budget, £34k.

From the Independant, I'd get a 3-month/3k mile warranty, which includes consumables (clutch and brakes).

Now...from researching, I know that the RMS is a potential problem, as is the intermediate shaft. On this age car, could this still be a prob? i.e., if the RMS hasn't already leaked, is it likely to ever start? Also, I can't find too much on the intermediate shaft. Again, do I need to worry about checking this out?

If I were to take out a Warranties Direct policy for approx £300, added to the dealer warranty, would "most" people deem this sufficient? Would you also get OPC to do a 100-point check (or whatever they call it)? If so, do/can the OPC come-out, or would the car have to be transported from Indy dealer to an OPC?

Sorry for the long-winded email, but never spent this much money before (!!) apart from on a mortgage!

Any other things I need to look for, or questions to ask?

Many thanks,

Spencer.

Wow, you have done your research :)

From what I've heard, independent warranties don't cover all that much. You will need to look at the wording. I think if you get your car checked over by an OPC, and it passes, then you can get an official warranty. Recently, Porsche GB have decided that they should cover the RMS problem under this - so I would get your car inspected and get the official warranty(about a grand, not really sure). You can never be too sure with the RMS.

The car in question sounds like it is a fair price - not a bargain, though.

Thanks noony,

...once I start on a project, I'll easily go past the 4am barrier with the research!

Yeah, I did read about Porsche changing over from a 3rd party warranty supplier to an official Porsche one, and that RMS is covered...saw somewhere that £725pa is latest price, subject to any faults being corrected, plus the inspection charge itself.

Does anyone know if Porsche Centres ever come out to an Independant dealer to perform a check, or is it a case of only doing it at the OPC? (all the right equipment, alignment checks, etc) If not, then what do *most* people do w.r.t getting the car to an OPC?...get the dealer to trailer it?

I have seen cars a tad cheaper than that for similar spec, so ought to actually get out there and traypse around the forecourts having a look....oh, and drive one of course!...god, I'm in love with this damn car...dangerous....hmmmpphhhh

with a car of such lower mileage... with an after market warranty.. then it depends on where you want to take it...

take to your OPC and for their warranty but it is unlikely they will fund the transport...

but with a clear PPI it should be OK.... and with that dealer in question they have a good reputation and there are a few Pprsche specilaist that could do the PPI...

for that location you have GT One, Tognola.. not too far away.... they do travel.. at a cost !

btw.. when you get it, I would put on the newer sports steering wheel !

Haha, cheers Sundeep...how much for a new steering-wheel then?? :)
...I'm going to be chuffed to bits just getting the car! :D

...Currently in middle of reading the "911 Secret Revealed - 996" online book...some obvious "noddy" stuff there, but the kind of stuff I guess it's easy to overlook in the excitement (me especially!)...also some useful info like chassis codes, etc

end of the day, the 996 is a very complex beast, so a complete PPI would be needed..

assuming the dealer sells the car with a warranty, but you prob' want to check to see what specialist garages are happy to take that warranty.....

I'm guessing the dealer in question is Cridfords? If so I bought my car from them and had a PPI done by OPC Guildford. Wasn't a problem at all and Cridfords took the car in etc in their own time. What was a problem was that OPC Guildford charged me circa. £250 for the PPI when most other OPC's charge a set £125'ish.

Cridfords get all their service/warranty work done by GT one in Chertsey who also perform PPI's. After having a service carried out by GT one on my car as part of the purchase price I wouldn't have any qualms about getting them to do a PPI on a car being sold by Cridfords - there certainly wouldn't be any conflict of interest - have a chat with Peter @ GT one.

You're unlikely to get any movement on price with Cridfords, but what you can try and negotiate is a longer dealer warranty i.e. 12 months and any faults fixed. I had the following included in the purchase price of my car: new clutch; new rear tyres; 12,000 service, new MOT, small dent removed from d/s door; n/s/r wheel refurbished; plus the following done which were picked up in PPI: new spoiler wall; lower cam cover seals replaced.

Good luck - looks like a nice car if I've guessed right!

Larrrf, I guess "discrete" isn't my strongest point then, eh??.. :D

Yup, correctly guessed, and thank you very much for the advice Jon. I also spoke with Guildford OPC, and were very helpful and willing to squeeze in a PPI at very short notice if I needed them to...what I didn't know is that their prices are double that of another OPC!!

I also spoke to dealer today re the car, and asked about the RMS. We had a very bad line (so not 100% sure...sounds stupid, I know), but sure the guy did say it has had an RMS change before!

Bearing in mind (no pun intended) that the seal is only how the prob manifest itself, not the root-cause (from what i understand it's the crank running slightly eccentrically in the crank-case, wearing the main-bearing at the clutch end, and eventually knackering the oil seal)...would you still consider the car?...$64,000 question i guess...Even with a warranty (dealer or Porsche) for peace-of-mind, its the hassle of being without a car, and the distance involved to fix it (I live on the East Kent coast nr Canterbury).

Look forward to your thoughts...

Cheers
S

Need to buy a car with a years warranty.

You get some dealers that will give you up to three years when you buy a car!!!

Watch out for low claim limit ie £1000 or something like that.

Good luck

Well, subject to a PPI inspection being done by GT-One down the road from Cridfords, I'll be getting it in a few weeks time!....went over there the other day and metaphorically "threw the book at it". I spent a good couple of hours looking for anything amiss (per the books I'd read and other research) or any tell-tale signs. Looked great, really did. Drove beautifully as well.

I absolutely can't wait now!...V EXCITED!....

Thanks for your help everyone.
