Boxter s brakes

common problem on Boxster S and 996 & 993

the discs tend to corrode on the side you can't see, can be caused by water retention following washing etc

when Porsche service that car they check disc thickness with a micrometer

if the disc has sufficient thickness left they can be skimmed all OPC's have a skimming machine, i forget the cost but i think its about £120 an axle

Hi Mark,

I live near Blackpool, I would definitely reccommend that you get a second opinion before spending that sort of money. Try some heavy braking to clear any surface rust first. I don't know of any independent Porsche specialists in the Blackpool area though - I take mine to a place in Coppull called Classic Car Workshop, they are Porsche specialists and won't rip you off.

I'll try and dig out their number for you.

Cheers,

Matt.

Theres something about this issue in the latest GT Purely Porsche mag. It was from a reader who has the same problem. I cant remember what was said but it might be worth checking it out.

response from porsche customer assist:-

I am certain that we can resolve matters without referring the matter to our MD and with that in mind I am reviewing the case at the moment but I am waiting some feedback from my technical department.I can also confirm that I have received a copy of the 87 point inspectionthat was completed prior to the vehicle being sold and that there was noindication of corrosion at that time of inspection. I would also liketo comment that whilst the article, which you have very helpfullyforwarded, appears to strengthen your request each case is dealt withstrictly on its merits and would depend on factors such as mileage, the age of the vehicle, whether it was purchased from new or used and the type of component needing replacement.I would like to stress again that brake discs are not included in thewarranty being considered a wear and tear item. However, I willcertainly come back to you by the close of play 22 October 2004 with arevised decision.

thanks all for you help will post outcome
