I am looking for a C2 for every day use. I have been looking for sometime and have found an immaculate C2 Tip 38000 miles 97 (R). Up till seeing this car I leaning towards a manual car but now having driven this I dont know which is best.

I did notice a very minor unusual gearchange a few times when I tested it, do these tip models suffer from many problems?

Should it be cheaper being a tip or manual?

Any help please.

Hi Kevin

I ended up with Tip as everything else I wanted was spot on (Cab, Polar, Black hood and leather etc etc). I havent missed manual at all after getting used to it and the odd traffic jams on M25 and in town its a godsend without a clutch. I have to confess that I'm not technically sure what costs there may be in place of new clutches, but servicing stuff so far has been limited to brakes (pads and disks) on top of regular costs over the last 3 years. She's just coming up to 100k killerometers. (which most of you will know is 6s 11d in old money)

The Tip boxes are supposed to be pretty robust and its quite rare for one to fail if maintained correctly. If its for everyday use and you do alot of town driving a Tip box is a Godsend, but probably not as much fun if your into your track days.

I spent ages looking for a 993Cab C4 in midnight blue, but eventually got a C2 in polar with tiptronic as it was a good clean car from my local OPC....

The gearbox is good for normal driving but it has only four gears so it needs to be flogged to keep it going down country lanes. In 'manual' its pretty good fun though. Try a 6 speed manaul if you can before you buy

I recently read an article in Porsche World (I think Aug 2002) issue. It does a very good write up comparing Manual vs Tip. Whoever thought that manual is quicker will be in for a shocked with the results they acheived. If required I dig our exact date that copy went to press.

Here are the maintenance cost from a reputable specialist (starts with a J ends in Z) that I have taken from their website:

For a 993 C2 – ex vat

Clutch £775.00

Gearbox service £48.00

Gearbox service Tiptronic £205.00

Gearbox rebuild (plus worn parts) £950.00

Gearbox rebuild Tiptronic £1550.00

May help your choice…..

Hi Will, hows it going?

The figures don't tell you much without the frequency for tip and manual gearbox services, as £205 for an oil change sounds a bit steep, I wonder what the service they have quoted for involves as I can't remember needing anything more than an oil change on my Tip?

I would wager the manual box has a far higher failure rate, so Its probably all swings and roundabouts

Greg

Thanks for all your help,

what my delemer is that I have seen a very good c2 tip 38000 miles 97R which ive driven and liked at £34000 sports seats, artic silver, blue leather , white dials, computer and fpsh but 6 owners.

Or ive found a C4 manual 96p 33000 miles which has got a faultless main dealer history(9 stamps in the book),polar silver, grey leather sports seats, 18" turbo rims, official Porsche sports exhaust & sports suspension just fitted + loads of extras ie tracker, becker system a/c etc etc for £34500.

Condition wise you cant tell them appart.

Dont know which one to go for.

Help please :?

The best solution would be to test drive them both in the conditions that you will use them day to day. But it depends who's selling the cars as not everyone is test drive friendly.

And then all you have to do is decide which you enjoyed driving more, both cars have their posatives and negatives.

Hi Greg I am well thanks. Hope all is good with you et al... I agree with both of your points above and more importantly your advice re: what does one enjoy driving the most. That is the key to your choice Kevin, even if you do not buy one of the two cars above you will know which you want and can then concentrate on other examples of that specific model.

Service history and maintenance is very important.

Oops edited the message as misread bit about the C4.

Thanks, I have driven the tip allready and liked it. The dealer with the C4 Manual is holding it for me until Ive driven it on saturday.

i have a tip and wouldnt change it unless i was atrack day regular..

i love having no clutch on M25 and in london etc!

it makes the car much more usable on todays roads if its an every day car.

depends on how you intend to use it.

You've got to drive them both, and pick the one you feel happiest with. If you're gonna be in town a lot however, you might prefer the tip.
