Am in the market to buy a 1989/90 911 and wondered if anybody has any feedback on either Paul Devyea or Virgin911 as independent dealers asap please?

911 virgin.. hhhmm did visit them.. henry furman is the man there (I think that is his name).. seems ok

plus points = very passionate about 911 & very good web site (prob' the best out there for a 1st timer!) & would like to have a longer chat with him one day !

negative points = my view of course (although I only a limited amount of time when I was there) he offered me a 'very' one dimensional view of buying a 911 which was bordering on a heavy handed sales pitch i.e. his one view of the world but not necessarly your view or crucially the right view... I know how 'specialists' bang on about the right porsche irrespective of what it is (but not the necessarly the guideing light i.e. note the irony in how they have 2 prices!).. but the car's colour, spec & type are as important .. I dont do red/yelllow/green cars .. my choice !

but when I said I was after a manual black varioram lhd 993 c2/targa he said I was wrong.. and then something about old folk and something else... sure I restricted my choice but it's my money and somehoe telling me what I should buy instead made it a poor experience..... but I found what I was after ! I would of preferred to have been told about the cars and not tales of something to do with my job or another !

so had to get the guy cleaning the cars to show me the 993's ! which is a shame as I had heard some good stuff about this outfit... and of course trying to find the place... just give the address and I'll be there not go to roundabout A and call then at petrol station B call again ! eh ?

911virgin = still worth a visit... have good stuff there.... and may even have your porsche !

before I get flamed.. just being honest of my 911virgin experience.... but like I said I would like another chat with the bloke one day....

Virgin911

Bought my first 911 (88 3.2 Carrera) from Henry - very much a sales person and as Sundeep says has a fairly strong pitch because of that. Listen to what he says then go away and make your own mind up.

Talk to Ray Northway (0118) 971 4333 Grange La, Beenham, Reading. He maintains Porsches like the one you want to buy - he did all the jobs on my 88 3.2 Carrera. He sells a few cars too. Straight forward open and honest guys there.

Dont buy the first on you see (I did) shop around and make sure you take a mechanic or knowledgable Porsche owner with you. There are excellent cars out there and there are crap ones.

Service history is vital as is HPI check.
Get a copy of "911 and Porsche world" magazine and The Porsche club GB one.

Look up www.autotrader.co.uk and this site to see how many are for sale and get an idea of price range.etc etc
People who end up with excellent cars do lots of research first.
Good luck!

Hi Charlotte

My current pride and joy was sourced by Paul Devyea. Although he doesnt deal in LHD he was aware of my interest in a 993 to replace my 964. and called me when he was asked by a client of LaRose, to put some feelers out. I've had my 911's serviced by LaRose porsche since 1996. Paul runs his sales business out of the same premises. I've always found Paul a very straight, knowledgeable, and helpful chap. We've spent a fair bit of time chatting about the merits of the various 911 models, and he always seems to have for you if you pop in. He never has a particularly large stock, but seems to buy good stock moves quite quickly. (his pet moan is always how difficult it is to find well sorted cars). Having known him and the servicing business for so long, I committed the cardinal sin of not having a PPI done on the 993 when I bought it nearly three years ago. The car was/is a gem, confirmed by the local OPC when they had it in to do a wiring loom recall last year.

Charlotte,

Bought mine from Paul Devyea and would echo everything Hendo has said. Including buying without inspection and subsequently finding out the car is a gem!

If you go and see Henry with an open mind (and for goodness sake don't ask him about mileage !), and realise that he is every inch a salesman it's a worthwhile trip to go and see lots of cars in the same place. Keep in mind that he tends to have a bit of a 'pile 'em high, flog 'em cheap' approach and a lot of his cars tend to have big mileage.

I have no experience of Paul Devyea.

Here's a shameless plug for my own car which I am selling and may (or may not) be of interest.

Price is negotiable !

Agree with Sundeep's view of 911virgin. I think Henry means well, and really cares that you get a good car, but when I was looking, there was no room in his mind for me to be fussy about colour, number of owners, mileage etc. One point of view I suppose, but when you're spending a lot of money on a car, you want it to get what you want to get depsite the salesmans best efforts to shift their stock. Have you tried Autobahn? I ended up buying from them - and found them to be very helpul and knowledgable.

Good luck.

Haven't used them so can't give any feedback but the website is worth a browse.
