Hi Folks,

I'm looking to buy my first Porsche. I specifically want a 993. I've found one locally - a C4 on 1996P. Only 24000 miles with full Porsche service history - all MOTs etc etc. Price (~35k) seems acceptable to me given the mileage and history and I like the independant garage that's selling it and feel comfortable doing business with them.

While I'm pretty knowledgeable about cars in general and a true car nut, I know little about Porsches. For background I have a 1998R 250hp turbocharged MX-5 that's in mint condition that I'll be keeping. I modified this car myself three years ago and it remains utterly reliable. I've been very involved in that car's owners' club and contributed and benefitted greatly from the community, both real and virtual. While I'm very familiar with getting my hands dirty, I do NOT want to modify the 993. It's essentially my dream car and I want to make a good purchase. Essentially at the moment I know little about Porsches (although I'm researching all I can right now) and I'd like to be sure I make the right decision. So in short, how may I get a worthwhile inspection done on the car I've found? I'm reluctant to go with the more mainstream services such as RAC/AA given that I seek, presumably, specialist knowledge.?What do you guys recommend? I'm in the South West by the way. The car I have my eye on LOOKS wonderful but I'd like to be sure...

P.S. I bought Peter Morgan's 993 purchasing guide so at least I'm familiar with the basics...

SunDiver,

I'm in exactly the same position as you, literally just started looking.

Is Peter Morgan's guide worth buying then? I'll probably do that asap, as it looks pretty useful.

Cheers.

I was in the same position a few months ago ! and here I am with (days away!) a 993 !

a great 'starter' guide = peter morgan

but for the daddy of guides = 991 secrets revealed

obviously the price reflects that in both cases !

I used ABS for the inspection on my 993 - very thorough and cost £250 - they advertise in porsche and 911 world mag - well worth a purchase for info and inspection pepople - there is a section n this very forum for servicing and inspections and ABS were recomended by someone here.

Interesting you mention your MX 5 (prior to my first 993 a C4 actually), I owned an MX5 which I was also fairly active in the owners club having been one of the very few people in the UK to import and fit a supercharger to, and hence I'm sure I recognise your name. Welcome to the club (one I'm just about to leave) but all the best. Good bunch of guys, girls and little boys (noony) on here!

Yep - I remember your name. I run a FM2 turbo kit - quite a few around now - but I think I was only the second person to put one on a 1.8. Been on for four years; very quick - datalogs at an easy 5 seconds flat to 60 with easy launch. There are literally hundreds of blown MX-5s here in the UK now - I personally know of around ten near where I live. Still, lots of fun and that's why I'm keeping mine...

Anyway, I'm in the researching-all-I-can phase right now - there's a lot to learn about Porsches and I'm not in a great hurry so it's fairly enjoyable as I'll hopefully be able to get the right one for me...

I would strongly recomment you get a PPI done even though you may buy from a dealer. I got Peter Morgan to do one on my 993 (which I have now had for a week - fantastic). It is well worth the £250.
