993 aircon

I guess it's quite subjective when it comes to judging weather the AC is cold enough. My wife doesn't like it too cold, so it's about right for her, but I like it almost freezing. However, I think we all agree that the 993 ac is nowhere near as good as ac in the modern cars on the market now. As I said, it's certainly nice to have but would you really trade a perfectly nice car in just so you can have ac on a 993?

The A/C on my Turbo 4 is fab, I can understand the sting you get with modern cars however there is a super switch which blasts out cold air with a vengeance. I'm assuming all 993s have the small and large star buttons for the A/C. Certainly the A/C is noticeable when on.

I leave the "lower setting" on all the time and then when I initially get in blast with the high button for a while to cool down quicky. In the manual it also says that the second button closes the floor and I think windscreen so all the air comes through the front.

Is a re-gas something you can trust to any Tom, Dick or Harry ? Is a mobile service adequate or is it worth travelling to a specialist. Can anyone recommend a specialist in the Guildford/Woking/Dorking area ?

I used my local Audi garage for a regas as they're a lot closer than the OPC and cheaper too. A specialist comes to them and does it so i suppose if they come out to you it cuts out the middle man. Its not a complicated process so long as the system is leak free.

Never had any problems with the A/C on my 993 c2 - would agree with LOJO that No. 2 fanspeed and lower A/C setting does a fine job. A godsend in the summer heat.

Had a mobile service around yesterday to re-gas my aircon. He reckons that there is a problem with the cooling fan under the nearside front wing - if you listen (outside the car) with the a/c running you should hear that fan running all the time. If not then the pressure of the system continues to rise past the normal 15bar to around 17bar, when it then cuts out. The net result of which is that the aircon will be intermittent, though when moving there may be enoug air flow to do without that fan. He reckons that there is a ceramic thermostat (?) on top of the evaproator that needs replacing. So my £65 re-gas is getting a little more expensive. I might be a little confused with the above, but I'll post again when he gets the part and completes the job.

He also mentioned that a common cause of failure is a build up of leaves in that evaporator leading to corrosion. He also suggested that poking around with a bit of wire to clean them out can also cause more damage than good.

Hi Mortod,

The "ceramic thermostat" he refers to is probably the Ballast Resistor. It is a common failure. There is an identical one on the other side for the oil cooling fan. They all fail eventually causing the fans to not operate on their Low Speed settings.

(If the oil cooling one has gone you will see oil temp going up to nearly 10' O Clock (when sitting stationary in traffic) before it then runs at High Speed)

There is a lot of info/diagnostics on this at

Thanks - interesting site.

I also notice an item suggesting that the airbag warning light can be triggerred by faulty solder joints behind the clock - Camtune want to swap out my wiring loom so I'll be giving this a go.

Just an update on my car: it came back today from Auto Solutions (http://www.autosolutions-aircon.com/) after a week away. Delivered to my door, with a replacement evaporator, which means dismantling half the front of the car -- eg fuel tank removal -- it cost just £600. Plenty of progress feedback while it was away gave me the confidence I was going to see it again too (it felt a bit odd letting a perfect stranger drive it away). Recommended.

I see in the Renlist forum reference to a DIY re-gas using a $4.50 can of R134A fluid, and a $10 pressure gauge. Has anyone found a UK supplier for these ? Is it even legal to DIY aircon in the UK ?

Thanks for the contact - I'm half way through using a Guildford based mobile chap, who seems to know his stuff with respect to Porches (he's gone away to get a new ballast resistor) - Autokool on 07973 265510.

But my point is that it seems as though our cars need a recharge more often than most (due to deteriorating rubber hoses), and rather than fork out £100+ every year for a re-gas, the alternative of a DIY fix for a fiver seems somewhat attractive. On Rennlist, a common decision seems to be whether to pay, say, $1000 for a new heat exchanger/condensor, or $5pa for a DIY re-gas. I know which I would go for.

But I suspect you need a license to handle the R134A gas, and I also suspect that it would be illegal for me to slip a can into my hand luggage when next in New York ?

My guess would be that these cars need recharging more often than most because they don't get used as much as daily driver-type cars, so the rubber hoses start to deteriorate. But then, I'm no expert...

I have a guy who comes out to re-gas mine and charges the princely sum of £55 for the pleasure. He's based in Hertfordshire, but within reason will travel anywhere 7 days a week. So even if it needs doing twice a year it still seems cheaper than to have the system refurbed.
