Hi,

I am looking to buyt a 964 carerra 2 or 4 coupe.I have a budget of up to £20,000. I have looked @ the reccomended dealer websites. I have never owned a Porsche, I do 5,000 miles a year... is this car a car for doing the odd running about in....and does anyone know if portiacraft in North west london are reputable. I am going in the near future to Prestige & performance cars near Uxbriudge to have a look. Any tips or advise wpould be great.

Thanks

Richard

Richard,

I went to Portiacraft when I was looking to buy. There are two guys there that run the place. The older man - I think his name is Harry, was particularly indifferent. I got the feeling I was interrupting his day by being in the show room. The other younger fellow there was very helpful though. They've been in business a long time there and I haven't heard any horror stories so I guess their cars must be good.

Henry at Prestige and Performance is a real character. He'll tell you over and over that it doesn't metter how many miles / owners / etc the car has had, but how well it's been looked after. In my opinion that's only half true. People do care how many miles and owners a cars had. But think the cars are good.

Good luck.

Uxbridge - tried 911 Virgin? Loads of cars.

Anyone got any views on them. I've been there, seemed very helpful.

Ah, instead of discovering in P&P a new independent delaer, I've found that P&P and 911 V are one and the same.

Sorry, I'm learning...

I got the same when i went to portiacraft - it really seemed like i was puttin him out asking about cars! - i ended up buying privately - but the car had been through portiacraft previousley - the only problem with them seems to be they must have bought a job lot of stickers - i had one on the service book , the handbook, the service wallet and still habe one on the reaer screen - yes the convertible reare screen ahs a bloody portiacraft sticker on it - i didnt think you were supposed to stick anything on the cabriolet rear windows at all!

Close friend of mine bought a car from 911 Virgin (Uxbridge) and he has since spent some £10+k getting it sorted.. So I would get the car checked over independantly if you are not 100% sure.

What sort of problems did he have TLG? Did he buy at the 'millennium bug' price or full whack?

Hi Richard,

I've recently been in exactly the same position as yourself and now own a LHD '92 C4 coupe in black with all the extra's. I paid just under £18k from Formulaefuch in Notts and generally the cars been fine apart from a £800 bill to sort some idling issues. I'd certainly say its a car you can use for the daily commute (although dont expect great MPG etc). I do 50 miles a day and have put 4k on in the last 3months.

I went to 911virgin and whilst they were helpful there was no wriggle room on price atall and i dont totally prescribe to the 'mileage does'nt matter etc line'. To most mileage does matter especailly at resale time when the dreaded topend rebuild could loom on a high mileage car. Condition is however the most important factor and an independant ppi/cyclinder leakdown test a must (although they cant pick up things which are intermittent such as my idling issues).

So long as you find a reliable and reasonable local specialist and dont skimp on the servicing then its a great car to own. It can have the effect of inducing ownership paranoi however due to the cost of the car and potential costs if it needs work. I take the view that the potential lack of depreciation will offset extra petrol/servicing etc and in the meantime you have one of the finest cars on the road even today. Finally, dont discount a LHD import from places such as Germany, they are atleast as well looked after and you would get a better spec/lower mileage car for considerably less cash than RHD and believe me when i say that driving a LHD in the UK is forgotten in a matter of days (apart from trying to get car park barried tickets!). This could leave you 2-3k from your 20k to budget for servicing and give some peace of mind.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Giles.

Try Gmund Cars (web address
www.gmundcars.com) Andrew is very knowledgable when it comes to what to look for. He usually knows where a car has been and who has owned it previously, most of this is attributable to him having clients who go back to him to change their cars.

Other than that see what your money could buy you in Germany
www.mobile.de
. Has to be the best site around when it comes to Porshces for sale.

Autobahn in Coventry are worth considering,so are Hartech, hanley Porsche and Shirleys garage in the midlands.
