Hi Everyone,

I've Had my 1997 Varioram 993 Carerra 2S for a year now. It has come up to about 60,000 miles now and is due for a service soon. Despite all my searching, cant find reference to timing belt / chain changes anywhere on the internet.
Few easy questions to you tech wizards out there.

Does my particlar model have a belt / Chain ??

if so, when does it need doing and is it a big job ??

Also at 60K what else needs changing ?? Break fluid, belts ?? water pump ??

Many thanks for all your help.

Amer.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but doesn't it say in the owner's manual/handbook?

Theres a chain driving the cams. The tensioner is hydraulic using engine oil pressure. My 1988 Carrera had a new tensioner fitted as a precaution at 150,000 miles due to it being a little slow on startup to take up the slack. The chain runs on plastic runner rails which may need replacement at engine rebuild time. High milages well over 100,000 are acheived with no rebuilds. See "Porsche 911 performance handbook" by Bruce Anderson.

I would have thought that with regular servicing, oil and filter changes with correct spec oil - that at 60000 you can forget any issues other than those on the service schedules in the manual.

There are also the rubber engine fan/aircon belts (which are visible).

Take it to a Porsche dealer or Porsche specialist for the work to be done and budget 350 to 450 pounds unless they find problems.

It's not easy to answer your question as mileage covered is a factor; but so too is age. Services are due every year or 12K miles. Small service [oil, filters, general check-up]; followed a year/12K later by a major service [minor service items plus plug change]. Brake fluid needs replacement every 2 years and there is a page with fluid change stamps in the service book, so you can work out if one is due. The service book also details exactly which items are checked/changed at each service.

Thanks Guys,

Just what I needed to hear. I was getting a bit worried about the timing chain.

I can remember the nightmare I had trying to change the belt on my 300ZX TT, and there was acres of working space, room for a small tent under the bonner!! Plus the thoughts of thoses suited smiling cheshire cats rubbing their hands together at the dealership tends to put me off, especially when they charge 300 quid to change a fuse !!

I have checked out the service history, it has always been regularly serviced at a main dealer or specialist at about 8-10K with all the stamps and bits and bobs done.

I think just a skin-full of nice fully synthetic oil with a few filters, new belts and new break fluid should do for this year.

Ta again.

Amer.

If I were you I would get a specialst (doesn't have to be a dealer) to do the service so you have the stamps in the book. You may loose if/when you come to sell without the history and the loss could be more than a standard service or two.

As a buyer I wouldn't go near a car without full history from dealer and/or specialist.

Just a thought.....
