The car is at the dealer

Sorry for being ignorant, I thought the 996 GT3 was equivalent to 993 RS, so what's GT3 RS? Looks really mean! Is it street legal with those rear spoiler?

Yep it's street legal. It's a slightly lighter and slightly more powerful(unofficially) version of the normal GT3.

I remmember seeing JC driving the GT3 in TopGear a while ago and it was so good even he liked it. This GT3 RS must be awsome! Can't wait to see it in action! Just be careful, I'm the silver one that's 3 laps slower than everyone else!

Hi Mick

Firstly got your cheque today, thanks.

Yeah as Noony says the RS is a more track orientated version of the GT3. You'll have to come out for a ride...

The 993RS is a lightened, beefed up version of a 993A GT3 is a heavier, beefed up version of a 996A GT3RS is a lightened (?), more beefed up version of a 996

Hugely simplified but the point is that although a GT3 is more track-focussed than a 996 is was not the car a lot of "enthusiasts" wanted - it is not a 996RS by a long way - too heavy, arguably dodgy brakes.

But these days is it possible to make a lightweight road legal track car?

The GT3 RS is still based on the GT3. And are you talking about the PCCB?

I have to be honest, I don't know the spec of the GT3 vs GT3RS but the GT3 did not go to the weight-saving lengths that the 964RS (now there is a proper car! ) or the 993RS did - no electrics, thinner glass, thinner bumpers, cut-down doorcards, and as a result it ended up being heavier than a standard C2.

Re. brakes, I was referring to the supposed "over-heating" problem with GT3 brakes. There is an argument though that they are just fine if used "correctly".

PCCB are another issue altogether and seem a complete shambles. Carbon composite brakes you can't use on a track - what on earth...

That's true, but after all, they were selling this car in America too

Never heard of that overheating problem. PCCB sounds very poor indeed...

I agree the GT3 RS is not quite the stripped down racer it could have been but regulations and health/safety make it increasingly more difficult for makers to build outright racers....maclaren admit they couldn't build the F1 today for those very reasons......so i think all in all the new RS is a fairly good compromise and offers an awesome track weapon that could be used day to day if need be.

As for the brakes...i have the carbon ceramics on my car and on the three trackdays i have done they have proved awesome.....with no sign of fade...and stopping power i can only describe as like driving into a wall....how long they last only time will tell but first impressions are very good

Don't get me wrong, I would sell my own mother into prostitution if I thought it would help me get my hands on a GT3 of any description. Never even been in one, but they look and sound fantastic.

Regarding PCCB, if you haven't already, do a search on Pistonheads. The issue is not with fade or feel (apparently that is awesome), but with cracking. There are a number of guys there with PCCB-equiped cars and they have had problems withthe discs cracking after just one or two runs. Porsche's response has been that they must have been mis-used! Apparently using them on a track counts are mis-use!!! How laughable. This wouldn't be a problem if they cost sensible money to replace but I gather they are thousands of quid. It seems that a lot of owners who track their cars are fitting steel discs and putting the ceramic ones in a box to put back on when it comes to selling the car. Not exactly the original point of the brakes is it, but it seems the only answer.

Have you checked yours recently?

Noony - re road-legal track cars, I point you to the Radical. I think the issue is the market for new, stripped out cars is limited. Interesting, the 2nd hand market is still super-strong. RHD 993RS's will soon be fetching more than GT3's. The going rate at the moment seems to be £64k

Yep the car had just come back from the dealer having had new rear tyres(5000 miles and three track days) and was given a clean bill of health...i've read on several sites about this cracking and heard lots of different views and as far as i can gather the cracks around the machined holes are normal!...its if ...as has happen on a few cars cracks develop round the rotor or travel to the egde of the disc that problems arise.

I think most of the reported issues with GT3 brakes refers to the Mk1. For the Mk2 the discs were larger bigger calipers etc. The issues are caused by over heating.

If you look at the size of the discs on a GT3, they are huge, and so much heat is generated under heavy braking, cracking does occur to the disc's. I beleive the 993RS had 993 Turbo brakes, where as the GT3/2 brakes are larger than the 996 Turbos. It is hard for a manufacturer to be able to get enough ari into the brakes to cool them.

I have spoken to a number of Porsche Specialists and they all say to duct more air to the front brakes.

On my previous Mk2 the discs did start to crack, but at no point did they fade etc etc.

Anyway I went for steel discs on my RS as they are still fantastic, plus cheaper to replace :)

I folow a blue/white GT3RS on occasions through Albury towards Guildford with the reg 1 PHU - very nive especially when he tanks it up Newlands Corner. Try to keep the Scooby on full boost but he's always pulling .......

Saving my pennies but it'll be a long save!
