If anyone out there is looking for an independent garage in Sussex, then give Addspeed Performance Cars a try (01403 255616). I took my 993 over there to change the gearbox oil and also to have a small bumper section replaced and repainted and was really impressed. Not a big place but Keith, Yvonne and the team were efficient, honest and good value for money. Everything was completed on-time, at quoted cost and absolutely no hassle. Even got a free T-Shirt! Definitely worth checking out.

Hope you're right -- I'm taking my 993 in tomorrow morning to have the sticky clutch looked at...

Been there, come back. they couldn't find any fault, except it's just possible the clutch is on its way out since it's done 74k miles, and the clutch has never been replaced...ouch.

That said, they were very helpful and professional, and they're clearly enthusiasts, which is just what you want in a specialist.

Manek

If you need you new clutch you might want to think about having words with the guys that did the PPI. That is exactly the sort of thing they should be telling you. Did they give you a written appraisal - any comments on the clutch?

James

I need to speak to those guys, yes... All I got was a verbal report on the phone -- but I haven't had their invoice yet so I still have a little leverage.

Bit is there actually a way they might be able to tell if the clutch was failing? According to Addspeed this morning, you don't get much warning -- it just goes.

I am not sure about being able to tell if a clutch is failing other than forcing it to slip e.g. hard acceleration up a hill but it seems more than a coincidence that is "just goes" just after you bought it.

If you are near Reading or Newbury Berkshire try Ray Northway and his crew - helpfull - even on the phone - down to earth, look like they service more Porsches than AFN Reading (who are a few miles up the road) judging by their activity and book ahead need. Always willing to go the extra mile in my experience. Oh - and no bullsh*t either.

Having bought my 993 last week from AFN - Sorry, now PORSCHE Centre Guildford and had it handed over with no radio code (so no functioning radio) and tyre pressures 30 31 34 36 despite this being a requirement of the 12 month check which they have stamped the book for.... I wonder if this qualifies for penalty points and a couple of per tyre fines?

I guess the airline ad guage didn't get reconnected when they completed their expensive rebuilt showroom facility last week...

Oh yes! also it took a week (and reminders) to get £1000 pounds deposit back which I inadvertantly paid again in the bankers draft in my excitement to get the car.

Not to mention the trouble getting the salesman to get the car out of the showroom and to let me have a test drive in the first place.

It was in the end probably the fastest purchase (notice I didn't say sale) that he has ever had to process the paperwork for.

Customer service quality is in the detail.

Manek,

The sure way to test if the clutch is on the way out is to get 3,000 revs on the counter then drop the clutch - if it slips it needs changing ! (activity best carried out in empty supermarket carpark !) There's no real other way of knowing. Supposedly the pedal will get heavier, but frankly I didn't notice any difference in mine when my clutch wore out.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that you'll find out on Sunday whether or not you need a new clutch !

Guess I will!

Keith at Addspeed is great, he did all of the work on my old 964.

Only had one problem where I left the car for 2 weeks whilst on holiday for them to try and track down some of the oil leaks.

They got a bit enthusiatic and I came back to a heavy 4 figure bill... having taken most of the car to bits. Fair do's to Keith tho, after discussion he knocked a large amount of the labour off the bill (which was three pages long...)

my car has just come back from GCS in horsham who rebuilt the 993 ,post body work al being done ....jez fitted it all up as if he does it every day hes a genius on 911's ...absolutely brilliant mechanic. and my mates turbo 4 had a diff whineand jeze just whips the diff out while u chat to him without a second thought looks so simple when you know what your doing eh!

GCS also had an engine sent over from hong kong for a rebuild as the guy has heard his reputation and wanted it done by him ----proof is in the puddding!

We got a clutch for our old 993 at northway, was half the price that Reading wanted, and better service.
