Oh my god, I cannot believe my luck, had the 4s dropped of earlier till monday, was told it was going to be seal grey, but it's actually meridian, the colour I have ordered!!! The car is well spec'd with PCM, Xenons, bose sound, gold porsche wheel centres (which dont look as good as the standard 4s wheel centres), parking sensors and porsche crest in headrest.

Went for a drive followed by my mate who has a 2 month old 996 carrera 2. We took a good long route through the peak district out to a place called 'Whalley bridge' (Not named after me), where you get to drive along the best long sweeping roads i've come accross, the roads wind down the side of a mountain (big hills really, but bare with me!) I had already by this time scared myself silly and was wishing that the seats were natural brown leather intead of black, but I continued thundering into each bend, carefree. This is where the car (nicknamed already as J-LO due to her gorgeous massive arse) stole the show, we left my friend in his carrera 2 tiptronic for dust, he is probably a better driver than me, and already well aquainted with his car while im still not fully sure of J-LO, but the speed that you enter corners in the 4s is nothing short of ridiculous, some corners you just dont need to brake for, just back of a little then hammer away. my mate told me when we returned that he was going flat out, but wasn't able to put the power down anywhere near where I was, good old 4wd and all the gizmo's that J-LO brings with her! I did find understeer foot down in second coming out of tighter bends, but the roads were quite slippy and later on at home i noticed the tyres were not overly blessed with rubber.

The drive back home is slow due to unthoughtful traffic on twisty roads, but by now im already smitten and thinking of ways to sell up home before monday comes when I have to give J-LO back. Once home the day takes a crazy twist, J-LO is a demo, not mine, never gonna be mine, but yet I find myself washing her in light drizzle!

I took the oppotunity to take a few snaps which I shall post shortly. The only thing im a little worried about is J-LO's arse, she is so damn wide!

Thanks for reading my first afternoon with a super model!

Sarbs

What is the story here? I don't quite follow. Have you ordered a 4S and been lent one for the weekend?

Whatever, it sounds like that 4S is quite a car. I love it that they have brought back the reflective rear strip. Now if we can just get them to bring back round headlights too!

Cheers, James

I'll second that James, a welcome return to the reflective strip! Almost looks like a 993

James I've a 4s on order that will be here for march, I have been lent a 4s untill monday by my friendly porsche dealer, and am loving every bit of it. The reflective strip does look good, but the car on a whole looks so much better than the standard 996, the 4s has the 10 mm lowered suspension as standard and with its extra width from the turbo body it has a real squat toad like presence. I love it.

Gonna go on my favorite route tomorrow morning hopefully 5-30/6.00am start, this should allow me to push a little more without too many obstacles to over take. Then in the afternoon im off to swindon and then back to south yorkshire, so I shall find out how good she is on the motorway. will post my finding tomorrow night.

Is it the front you're looking for? She's mine!

Congratulations Sarbs!

You are right about the way the 4s sticks to the road...but be aware that when she will go her way, you'll have a hard time to recontrol the situation. I made that experience during a track day in Francorchamps. When the rear is slipping, you control it as a propulsion but when it's too late I think you should revert to the reflexes applying to a traction... I didn't and just smashed the brakes which lukily stopped me without any damage along the track! Ouf! Now my 993 doesn't have your electronic, so I think It could be even worse in your car when she decides to do it her way.

Chears.

J.P.

Hello Toga, I see you own a 993. Whats your opinion of the vehicle. I'd appreciate your views as a 993 owner. I'm in the Market for a 993 C4S/ 2S and as I've never driven or owned one I'd like a current owners opinion.

Is the 993 really as good as its made out to be?

Regards,

Lee

In the words of Micheal Jackson 'Shes out of my life'! Handed the best car I've ever driven back this morning. Gutted!

Mossy try and get a back issue of 'GT purley porsche' magazine, last month they had a review of the 993 carrera 4s. I have a coulpe of other mags which have reviews of this car, in my opinion its one of the best looking porsches made. Unforunately in all the reviews i've read on it, it doesnt fair very well, one mag refers to it as a 'kings road' porsche as it looks great but just doesnt drive at allwell! I will look through for the other mag names and dates. All mags say that the standard carrera 4/2 is far better than the 993 4s/2s, you've been warned!

Back to my woes- 'Shes out of my life, I dont know weather to laugh or cry......I dont know weather to live or die' etc etc...

Roll on march!!!!!!!!!

Hi Lee

well, the 993 is my first Porsche! So I cannot compare it to any other model. The engine is a 3.8L with 300Hp which was a factory option in 96, and I really enjoy the acceleration it gives. This engine has more torque than the standard one, and according to my independant specialist, it's much stronger in the low rpm's. Now why a 4s and not a 2s... Well I do not consider myself as a great champion, nevertheless I like fast driving, and I'm convinced that a C4 is safer then a 2. I mean the 4 will draw the limit a little bit further than the 2, on open roads when the weather is "humid". Now if you like to drive on closed tracks, I believe a C2 will performe better because it's lighter. Another advantage of the 4s compare to the 2s: you have almost all options available with the brakes, chassis leather interior, computer, etc... of the turbo model.

I drive around 7000km/year. I performe an oil change every year. weak points of the car:

around 100.000km, you will have to change the 2 triangles of the front suspension system. The reason is that the silentblocks on the axel of those triangles will probably be broken. The way to see it: introduce a lever along the axis and force it aside to "open" the silent block. If they are broken you will see it. (+-500Euros for both). On my car, I had to change also the direction servo which was leaking. (+-500 Euros again) On both side of that servo, you find a caoutchouc cover. Pull those covers out of their end fixation. If there is oil then you'll have probably to change it.

The tires don't go very long... with the rear ones +- 10000km!

And each time I change them, I ask a geometry on the four wheels.

Well, you know everything I know about it!

It's really a great car to drive...and to look!

The 911 & Porsche World magazine issue from november 2001 gives a good buyer's guide on the 993 and the title is: Better then all the rest!

<Sorry image not available after migration>
Hi again!

to be correct, I just x-checked my bills, and the direction servo was 706.9 Euros and not 500! Now, Lee If you would like to know something specific, just as ask;

Ciao

Hello Sarbs and J.P,

Thanks for the advice and the info chaps, its appreciated.I'm not sure whether I want the 4S or the 2S I'll make my mind up after I've driven them both. Having never driven a 911 at all I'm sure I'll fall in love with both of them. The depreciation on 993's in general is amazing. I've seen the same cars advertised at different times by different owners with little difference in the price. ADMIN's obviously a 993 fan!

I love the C4S photos Sarbs, it looks the business. Have you driven a 993? if so how do they compare? is there a noticable difference in the performance?

I've never driven either, I admit I'm drawn to the 933 by its looks, its sound and by what its represents, the last of the legendary period of 911's. I recently spoke with a salesmen at Porsche San Jose California ( working there at the moment) and he said they could sell between 6 and 10 993's C4S/ C2S a week without any trouble, they move 96/97 specs for around $70k, the new 4S is 86K which when you think about it, is amazing. He said that although the 993 was a great car, it was more difficult to drive and that his wife were intimidated by its driving caracteristics, he said the 996 could be driven fast by anyone.

Anyway, happy driving chaps,I can't wait to get back home and begin the search for my own 911.

Regards,

Lee
