How reliable are 911 Trubo S models?

I am looking for first hand info on maintenance costs and reliability issues. I am trying to decide between my two Dream Cars, and have found a lot of good info, but reliability was the one area where all I could find was info parroted from some journalists talking heads. I'm going to ask the sub dedicated to the Nissan GTR as well. I am smitten with both of these cars legacies and heritage, and want to own one or the other. This will be the main deciding factor for what my end goal will be. What are experienced Turbo S owners advicevidmate word counter
?

hello
Came out of 2015 GTR into 2013 991.1 Turbo S

absolutely no regrets in any way in the 4 months of ownership.

Have a rattily interior otherwise in my humble opinion the Turbo S is better in every way

Happy to answer for any specific points?

:welcome: to 911uk

All turbo versions of the 911 are notoriously reliable - especially if they have been looked after correctly. As they get older owners will incur significant age and/or mileage related expenses but no more than would be expected of such a machine. I suspect that a GTR would incur the same.

I note that you specify the 'S' version in your question from which I assume that you're considering a Gen 2 997 or a 991.

There are lots of owners of these cars on our forum and several are regular contributors so you should get some personal responses. In the meantime you might find it useful to log on to the 997 and 991 sub-forums and scroll down the thread titles. By doing so you'll find numerous threads that have discussed the virtues and any issues with these cars.

Good Reading. :thumb:

Had mine for over 7 years, no problems whatsoever! :thumb:

A turbo or a turbo S, there's no real difference other than the S tends to come with PCCB's fitted as standard. Engine & Gearbox are the same, although the engine is tuned up slightly.

Had 2 turbo's, a gen 1 and currently a gen 2. Never had a single issue with the Gen 2 and in 3 years it's been one of the cheapest cars I've owned.
Servicing is pretty reasonable, it's only the 4th yr service that's expensive at £995. The gen 2 also has PDK box which is sublime, best there is.

I've never driven a Nissan and whilst they look okay I certainly wouldn't buy one over a good 911. I know they're blisteringly fast and can be tuned to ridiculous power. I followed one round Croft on a track day and it under steered like crazy on the tight corners and didn't look planted on the other parts.

There's currently a very very cheap 997.2 turbo for sale on Autotrader at £59995, it's in white and has very low miles, never seen one that cheap.

Hope this helps you, good luck getting a car you've certainly picked the best time to buy one. :thumb:

Well I'm on my second one now over 5 years. First a 997.2 turbo- no bother at all over 4 years. And recently bought a 991.1 turbo S. I don't expect any agro from this either. As already intimated, they're pretty reliable and reasonably priced to service and run.

Maintenance is expensive on the Turbo S, but horrendous on the GTR as the frequency of servicing is shorter.

On back-to-back tests with standard spec and similar year cars, the Turbo S always comes out ahead of the GTR around the track.

The GTR has a heritage amongst specialist fans, but the Porsche has a universal heritage.

Buy from a Porsche OPC and have the surety of a warranty extendable to 15 years to avoid any worries about expensive repair bills. Not sure how far the warranty can be extended on the GTR.

A Turbo S can do 100+ consecutive flat-out standing starts and Porsche will stand over their product. The GTR is unlikely to make 100+ standing starts and Nissan will walk away from any problems after interrogation of the ECU.

So on the basis of the above, I know where my money would go.

Brilliant cars. I'm tempted to buy one myself and sell my 997 now 991 gen 2 turbo s is £100k for cars with less than 20k miles. Incredible VFM

Driving 992 made me feel maybe 991 not so bad after all

Not sure if original poster still about...

997 Turbo S 2011. bought June 2015. 15k miles whilst I've had it.

OPC Warranty work
- ancillary pulley wheel broke. Manufacturing fault so replaced and belts done under warranty (2016)
- light unit on illuminated carbon cill went. Replaced unit, carbon cill and sticker (2017/18)
- front coolant piping replaced (2019) - think most will need this around this age.
- nearside condenser replaced (2020)

Consumables/preventative
- 1 set of tyres (had new ones when I got it)
- 1 battery (consumable on all Porsches if standard)
- full under-seal protection and turbo actuator rod replaced at Precision (2019). The rods corrode but have the turbos checked as well.
- front nearside grill replaced as cracked.

Just renewed OPC warranty but that was in case I decide to sell..

Think that's all. Not seen many posting about issues during this time on their cars either. :dont know:
