A whack from behind

I was in a three car shunt (with me in the middle!) in my old E36 BMW.

The woman behind admitted responsibility straight off the bat.

I got quotes from three bodyshops, went for the middle quote which was £2K or so. I bought some decent second hand bumpers off ebay and fitted them myself, ended up getting the boot repaired for about £600. Total cost to me was about £1K and the rest was spent on some nice bits for the car.

So my advice would be just to get some quotes and speak to the third parties Insurance. If you're willing to do some work yourself you can pocket some extra cash (or more likely get some shiney shiney for your motor).

Sorry!

Hi Maxthedane, sorry to hear about this - heartbreaking when it happens but I guess small mercies that no one was hurt... repairs can always be made to cars, not always to people!
If you're interested, I have a spare rear bumper at home that's brand new - I bought a complete front and rear set and only needed the front one. PM me if you're interested... will happily sort for you. I live in Cobham down in Surrey - not sure where you're based?
Cheers and best,
Ryan

My 996 was written off for exactly the same damage as yours.

Were you able to buy it back? I'm guessing even with replacing the impact bumper you could fix that sort of damage to a reasonable standard for not very much if you're prepared to pick up s/h parts and get them fitted yourself.

Guys - thanks for all the helpful comments on this.

I hadn't appreciated the Insurance company might just send me the cash to get it done! Given the quote I have that would see sensible. I might contact them.

I've chosen to push to go with the Indy I bought the car from.

I now have a quote which I'm waiting to hear from the Insurance company.

Maxthedane,

I wouldn't be shy with the quoted price you get from your repair shop. I can't see for sure but there are various bits of trim, clips, heatshields, decals, wiring, etc that may be damaged or need to be replaced to bring this back to perfect condition and the price for these all adds up. If you are happy finding second hand parts and having them fitted you will get it done for a reasonable price but if someone else is paying then why not get new parts from the OPC and get your preferred body shop to paint/fix them?

If your bumper is split you will need a new bumper & bumper bar, what is the upper retaining trim for this looking like (under the engine cover, black with 4 screws)? Is the impact bumper underneath undamaged? you can't really tell without taking off the bumper. Also at the point of impact is the connector for the rear number plate lights - is this undamaged? If it has taken a whack it could easily fail down the line and you will fail your MOT and have to pull the whole rear end off again to fix. I can't imagine parts for this lot being much less than £1k at OPC, plus paint & not even looking at the engine cover. I would probably be looking to try to get £2k out of their insurers so you can make sure it's all fixed without cutting corners.

Without cutting corners the quote I've had includes:
Engine lid
Bumper
Upper bumper trim
Bumper heat shield & trim
Fixing electrics
Painting

Over £4K to do it properly which is what I'd like

Not sure how to post multiple images so I'll put a couple up individually

This happened to me a couple of years ago. It all went through the third party's Insurance, who told me exactly who they were going to send it to and they checked out as specialising in high-value cars (not that my 996 is, but it was good to know that they weren't going to send it to Bob's Value Beaters).

They collected, returned, kept me informed throughout the process and in fact didn't replace the boot lid as they said it would be hard to get a like-for-like. The repair is invisible though and the damage was distinctly worse than yours. They provided a hire car and were happy to go like-for-like but I asked them not to as it really didn't bother me and I've heard so many horror stories about massively inflated charges.

All in all, it was really straightforward and I would absolutely recommend just letting the third party's Insurance deal with it. They do this literally all the time and have no interest in ripping you off.

Happened to me in another car just over a year ago. Elected to go through other chap's third party, electing to get repairs made at a bodyshop of my choice. One year I've yet to receive a cheque to cover the invoice from the bodyshop.

Never again for me, just going straight through my own policy and let them recover the costs off the other party.

Contact the other drivers Insurance and ask to speak to their third party capture team. Raise a claim with them directly, the driver will only have to accept liability.

No claim on your Insurance, they provide the courtesy car, no recovery process between your Insurance companies, it all runs smoother this way.

If you have any questions just PM me I worked in car Insurance for years.

Kind Regards,
James

Darth if you did the above are you obliged to declare the claims when re-insuring? Being as you are still claiming albeit from a 3rd party?

In answer to your original question to me - yes, once you are on the system you've been in a non fault accident its highly likely your premium will increase.

Once you start pushing for a £4k repair, they may write it off.

Kas750's car wasn't written off in his ownership, he bought it as a write-off (with similar damage) then fixed it for way under the amounts bounded about on here.

Hence me saying find a decent bodyshop and get the other driver to foot the bill.

Alex makes a good point about the insurers potentially writing the car off, do you have an agreed valuation on your policy? I don't know what value they might put on the car but it's unlikely to be close to what you would get in a private sale so potentially £4K would be a substantial proportion of the car's value.

I also think that fixing a silver car with that damage would be much easier/cheaper. You could probably find VG+ condition used body parts that would go on without paint due to the numbers produced, possibly with the correct decals in place, etc. With a car in maxthedane's colour (lovely colour, what is it?) everything is going to need to be painted.
