Help!
Every now and then I lose all power for a second or two as if the car has stalled but it hasn't. No warning lights appear on the dashboard.
The dealer I purchased the car from has replaced the throttle unit hoping this would resolve the issue but it occurred again at the weekend whilst in 4th gear driving at a steady pace.
Any ideas?

Going to need a little more info here i'm afraid ..

First off a garage throwing a new throttle unit at a car then they either had a reason , ie fault codes or they are not a porsche garage and took a guess ..

porsche specialist ?

Do they or you have any fault codes to give any indication of the fault ?

Do you have your foot on the throttle when it loses power or is this off throttle ?

Do the revs drop or is it just a general lack of power .. ie you put your foot down and nothing seems to happen ?

Any starting issues .. does it spin over many times before starting ?

is this temp related .. ie more when cold or hot ?

Fault codes are the main thing we work on .. if no codes then that will actually lead me down a certain path .. but have they been checked .. kinda important this question ... so ?

I explained the issue I was having and they mentioned to me that they had experienced it once before on a 996 boxster and they replaced the throttle unit and problem didn't happen again which is why they replaced mine. The garage are a Porsche Specialist!

As no warning lights appear on the dash the engineers were unable to find any fault codes that would cause this issue.

My foot is on the throttle when it occurs and it only happens for a second or two.

I haven't looked at the rev counter when it occurs but I just feel a lack of power as if the engine has cut out but it hasn't.

It doesn't seem temp related as it has happened in August and last week.

I am told there are no codes to give the engineers an idea on what is happening.

I hope you can give some guidance.

Ok .. i can see why they went this route .. no fault codes and it's a pain ..
basically the car doesn't see anything wrong with any sensor so as far as its concerned everything is just fine .

You have an issue though .

Question .. is the car a Tip or a manual ?

I need you to look at the rev counter when this actually happens .. obviously do it safely :)

By temp i mean when the engine is cold or when its at operating temps .. is it one or the other or is it both .


Hunches so far ...

Fuel pressure .. the car can't monitor this so has no idea if it has enough fuel .. wrong symptoms for you but it's a possible .

Tip boxes can cause issues .. incorrect learning values .. what we call granny mode .. very slow to respond basically .. again it doesn't sound right if you do have a tip but needs ruling out .

CPS .. hmm .. again a possible .. temp related .. ie dam hot but the rev counter will drop and again wrong symptoms .

We are also left with a wiring connection making and breaking a connection .. bit of a needle in a haystack there but again a possible .

Answer the above questions please .. and any more detail on what it feels like .. does the car feel as if you have the brakes on etc .

Bit of a tricky one so far .. and i can't see the car so much harder !
 
The car is manual. 2005 C2 manual cab.

I'll try and keep an eye on the rev counter when it occurs next but it doesn't happen regularly. 3 times in past 1,500 miles!

From memory the engine is warm or getting warm as a few miles have been covered after starting ignition.

The last time it happened, my son was in the car and he thought i'd purposely taken my foot of the accelerator and planted it again! i.e. no power and then power came back.

I had a similar issue years ago with a car. Turned out it was an immobiliser playing up.

Ignition switch problem?

I haven't experienced any problems with the ignition switch. The car starts first time!

I'll mention this to the dealer though to see if they've thought of this.

Manual so we can rule out the Tip stuff ..

watch the rev counter if possible ... no drop then we can kinda rule out electrics like CPS etc .

I'm still thinking fuel .. perhaps fit a new fuel pump relay as a guess .. not expensive .

Yep, sounds like fuel pressure to me, if it is I`m surprised that no fault code is thrown up though :nooo:
 
No fault codes for fuel pressure problems im afraid .. there are no sensors to monitor it .. hence a lack of fault codes points towards this :)

car doesn't have a clue what's going on basically !!
 
Many thanks all. I'll feed this back to the dealer and reqquest the fuel pump relay be replaced.
