987 Cayman has gone. 986 project starts

Just seen I had already posted up some of these bits, oh well more detail this time.

Pics of the seats when they arrived, note the hoops were not sitting nicely together.

Its annoying when you get new parts that are not "right" but that is why they are not OEM with the associated premium. Often as you done its better to just get on with it and make them work. Looks a superb solution :thumb:

Need to see a picture of the Boxster with the hardtop on, you don't see many. I used to have a complete contrast roof on my Z3m (black on an imola red car) and I loved it, come to think to it the roof it still in my mothers garage and I sold the car a couple of years ago

Thanks, Jonttt. I'm terrible at making decisions, so I was deliberating for some time on how best to handle the seat situation with D911. I liked the seats and had already had enough grief with D911. All worked out really nicely in the end, especially as the sales manager covered the costs of the fix.

Oddly enough looks like they're still available on D911 despite being told all manners of things about lead times, fires, loss of moulds... :?:

I stupidly didn't take any pics last weekend when I washed her. The two I have don't do her justice. I'll get it sorted!

Get your old top on eBay non?! They sell like hot cakes. Appreciate you're a busy man though, these cars don't perfect themselves :thumb:

Here you go Jonttt, only problem with the H/Top is storing the damn thing!

Wow, it looks great.

Storage is the issue with these, for the BMW I had both an OEM "trolley" and roof hoist ie to allow single person fitment and storage above the car. I never actually fitted it to my garage though and instead chucked it in my mothers on the trolley. I've not seen it for about 5 years but presume its still there lol

Yep at some point I'll have to put it on ebay, they used to go for about £500 but you need someone who is willing to collect with a fitting kit already installed or a van which always makes it harder.....one day

I assume yours will be a permanent fixture so storage won't be an issue.

Does the 986 have the fitting kit pre installed or did you need to source one with the top ?

I'm not sure about a kit, I 'think' that there are just a couple of dust caps to remove and it just drops in. You then lock it in place with two twist and lock levers and one above the rear view mirror and a plug for the heated window.

Mines been off since I got the car, also has a swanky stretch cover as well.

Trolley would be a good idea.

I think it improves the look of the car no end, especially from the back. I'll get some decent pics of mine sorted.

There is a mounting kit for circa £100 which is peppy for two bloody bolts. You need them if your car wasn't specced with the HT from factory.

Pretty simple to fit, they are side specific though so best to get that right first time.

I have zero interest in the soft top, so yep, storage not an issue. Which is good as I have no garage and my pokey house in Cambridge is at capacity with baby stuff these days

Fitting kit wasn't standard unless the car was supplied with a hard top .

Its a two man job .. ( women job as well to be correct ) to install or remove the hard top .

Storage is a pain , there is a trolly these stand on for workshops and home use or a rack system that bolts to the wall .

Cayman wasn't introduced until the 987 .. hard top on one of these is imho a 986 Cayman ... totally different look to the car .. which to be fair i actually like ..

Unlike the Cayman which i don't .. aesthetics of the Cayman don't suit me through out the range but that's just me .

These hard tops can also creak a lot so a bit of extra work might be needed .

Marty .. as ever .. :thumb:

Has anyone got a picture of the trolley/stand that they can put up here please? Or better still the dimensions if you have one.

My hard top is great noise wise, its the soft top that drives me up the wall, more creaks and squeaks than a cattle truck!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ECD-Germany-Hardtop-Stand-Universal-127x127x75/dp/B00N2NJIY6

Generic one ... might need front legs cuttin off .. i'm unsure but it looks the same as what we use .

Soft top .. a creak above your head or passengers its a pivot pin .. roof fabric pulled back from the front, remove and grease the pin ... more info if required .

Door seal , clean and wipe Rain X over it .. do the same on the window where it touches this and leave to dry .

front latching hooks each side . i use krytox and lubricate the plastic part of this .

front seal .. it touches the frame above the windscreen .. gummi fledge all over the rubber .. clean first .

Rear CTL lid .. the bit that raises .. clean the rubber seal on the fabric roof , clean the CTL then gummi fledge ...Seal at the base of the CTL .. clean and gummi fledge .

Basically any rubber seal gummi .. if against a window then rain x it .

Some interesting bits there, Iain, thanks. Hadn't even crossed my mind to try and fix and of the squeaks and rattles.

I do need to take the HT off to remove the soft-top so maybe I should make this part of the job.

Thanks Iain, I did sort the rear lid as that didn't sit right and creaked, as you say it's mostly dry rubber!
Will get to work on it today as weather is good.

Gone for the 'soft top delete' today. Left the motor and mechanism in. My thinking that for the sake of 2kg or so it's way easier to put a soft top back in and I don't have an issue with the bodywork 'arch' no longer being held down.

So I'm running a 7kg penalty having a hardtop and softie delete. Obviously centre of gravity is a touch worse. May look to putting the hardtop on a diet next Spring. As it is, I can go 'Speedster' in 5 minutes flat as long as I have a second person to help lift.

Went for a drive sans roof of any kind, no extra noise or buffeting surprisingly.

Hardtop is 23.6kg OEM.

Softie is 16.6kg not incl motor and mechanism.
