I'm in a dilemma

Someone I know wants to scratch a Porsche itch and has approached me to see if I would be willing to sell. I'm off to spa for the WEC in May and I would like to take it but then another part of me thinks that the money I may get would make a serious dent in the mortgage.

I have a £300 of paint to do and a small list of things to do this year but this is one of the best C4S I have ever seen.

So do I sell? What do you think I would get? Or do I hang on, enjoy it until I sell up everything and move (which is the grand plan)? (plus these are rising slowly and I don't want to sell at the wrong time like I normally do)

Thoughts?

If the mortgage is around 2% P/A its cheap money. Likely the C4S is achieving a greater return than the equivalent amount of the loan so keep the car and enjoy it knowing the longer you keep it the more mortgage it will clear in the end.

After a lot of faffing around (see other posts) I have decided not to sell. I took someone I know out for a drive and apart from making him sick I decided not to sell even though he wanted to buy.

The car is too special. So what to do? Just enjoy it?

Nah. I have now finished my Golf GTI Mk5 resto project (41,000 miles, totally stock that is now 90% immaculate) so back to the Porsche I go.

Here comes the man maths:

A client of mind is about to buy a car. BMW 530d with all the toys. Lovely thing but going to cost £4K down and then £500 a month. That just about covers the depreciation. He will never own it. We have 3 cars (C4S, GTI and a R53 Mini Convertible). Not one of them is depreciating and all are paid for. All are near immaculate.

The Porsche has cost me £180 on average per month and gives me a smile every time I go out in her. That seems a bit of a bargain to me. (cough - £2 per mile)

So onwards to get the best C4S out there:

1) Full refurb of wheels at Wheel Specialist - this is being organised by Quorn Classic and Sports so although not the cheapest I know a good job will be done and it will be hassle free.

2) Front end respray. I could just get the bumper and front of bonnet sprayed and that would save me a shed of money but would be very hard to achieve really good results. So I'm doing the front end.

This will include polish and clear coat on the Xenons and I'm also going to do the door mirrors at the same time.

Also needs a minor service despite only having covered 1000 miles since the preventative work I had done last year. (4500 since last years service)

Suspension I am told is all fine but will also get that checked over when I have it serviced.

Dropping it off in the morning before going off to Spa for the WEC. Excited to see her immaculate.

PS - If anyone wants to buy my C4S specialised outside car cover please PM me offers. It will be going into dry storage in winter.

Sound alike a wise plan to me. These cars are to special to let go

Mines paid for too and in the scheme of things the maintenance per month is peanuts compared to the monthlies on my daily. It sounds like your in a great place with your collection.

The minor service (plus paint and wheels) has turned into another expensive service. If you read this you will know I prefer getting anything sorted so...

New Brake Lines (the one going over the gearbox
Brake copper lines
Air con pipe seal leak (which also means a regas)

*sigh*

Another bill that will be the wrong side of £2K awaits.

If you are dropping the engine for the brake lines, I would also do the Air Oil Separator if it's not been done already. Costs very little in parts but is a right pain if it fails some other time...

Many thanks - will do

Another trip to Quorn Sports and Classics for a minor service that kind of escalated.

First up minor leak on the Air con pipe so that needed sorting first:

Replacement, clean up and regas. Sorted.

Then the bad news - the brake pipes corrosion wasn't getting any better so they needed replacing:

So they were both done and the HEL lines put back on when it was all finished.

Underneath needs some detailing (just bought some stuff based on a helpful thread on here) but it isn't bad is it?

So that was mechanical stuff sorted. I keep asking about suspension but they report it is fine. It had a couple of coffin arms a few years back but everything just needed a clean.

Speaking of which the wheel arches and suspension needed a bit of a clean up and refurbish:

The wheels were also annoying me. They had been refurbed but only on the front some years ago. The back was a bit meh and although the fronts were near flawless they weren't perfect. So off they went to the Wheel Specialist. Failed QC from the guys at Quorn but on second try they were spot on::

That left the elephant in the wheel arch - the calipers. After much fretting I decided to keep them stock red. So off they went and came back rather nice:

Because they went to a paint shop for spraying rather than a caliper refurb place the quality of paint seems to be much better

Speaking of paint - stone chips on the bumper and bonnet was annoying and despite the paint having a paint correction when I first bought the car it was never going to look its best. So off to the paint shop it went.

My concern was that when the bonnet and bumper are done alone you can sometimes tell because it just doesn't blend. So with the bill spiralling at this point I bit the bullet and had the bumper, bonnet, wings and door mirrors done.

Did I mention the S badge being painted red as well?

So that is that. Great service by the guys at Quorn Sport and Classic yet again. They really go above and beyond.

What next?

Do I worry too much about the minor gravel rash? Or the line/scratch on the drivers window? Can you get windows restored or do I need a replacement?

I am taking out the screws holding external trim in place and respraying them (may buy new if I knew the part number)

Only very minor things left now I think. Looking forward to Sunday at Chatsworth. Come and say Hi if you see me.

Great work & tremendous amount of effort going into making your C4S truly special. One of my favourite threads..

Went to Chatsworth - think I could have a fair crack at getting second in the watercooled class (the guy that wins the first prize uses a dremmel to clean underneath his car - every part of the suspension is immaculate)

However, bad news. My car started running out of electricity on the way there. So with the battery light warning on I made it back and now have to take it back to Quorn Sport and Classic next week.

It is weird - since I bought it I would always need to trickle charge it if I left it over a week and even then sometimes it would drain slightly quicker (have to manually open the doors after a couple of weeks).

So alternator? Battery? Both? Who knows. Another bill awaits though :(

The alarm goes into sleep mode after a week, trickle charger or not. So you will have to open the car manually if it's been untouched.

If the voltage was showing low while driving, I'd suspect the voltage regulator (part of the alternator) but it could equally be the battery, the alternator itself
or an earth/connection. Needn't necessarily be expensive!

You must have been early, by your position on the lawn.
I came by a couple of times for a chat but you weren't about.
Your car does look good.

I do like a shiny car but polishing the suspension!! :dont know:

Thanks and sorry I missed you - I saw a fair few having a look but I was gawping at some of the lovely metal that had shown up. Had a couple of people that know the car come up to me as I was browsing and tell me how much they love the way it sounds, which made my day.

Was so many more there this year than last (weather?). Think the club did did admirably but next year the parking really needs sorting out. Some lovely cars - 928s, 356's etc were left in the overflow which in my mind is a travesty.

Next year I will hang around a bit.

When it is full of electrictiy again I will be taking it to the Silverstone Classic by which time I will hopefully have chance to sort the trim screws out and give it a good polish and wax. Will be in the campsite in the evenings and in the club car park during the day. If anyone is camping feel free to drop by, say hi and have a beer.

So first the good news

[/img]

Makes me want to spend the weekend cleaning the car (more of that soon).

A variety of new alternators were available but I chose the original Bosch as I want it to be stock engine wise and also I don't want to have to go back and change a poor quality item. I am very much a "buy once" kind of guy.

So the bad news.

I needed fuel so after warming the engine up a quick blast down the dual carraigeway to the Shell station was in order.

Sadly the oil gauge dropped to zero and I got an alert pop up. It has just had an oil change and I have no idea what is going on but the expense is starting to grate.

Secondly the car useed to run at spot on 14v. Now? It sits at 13v. I don't understand this.

But hey, it is gorgeous .......

So, the alternator has settled down and it is now steady at 14v.

However, back to the garage it went to sort the Oil Pressure Sender.

Quick wash tonight ready for Silverstone Classic.

And pack - who said the 911 isn't a practical car? 5 man tent, porch, carpet and all the stuff needed in the back:

If you're at Woodlands or the infield come say Hi. If camping we may just offer you a beer ! [/img]
