Hello everyone again
I haven't visited this forum for quite a while, so I've got a couple of questions.
Firstly, and I'm sorry if this is stupid, but does the UK spec 996 have an OIL/AIR SEPARATOR?....if they do I'm pretty sure my 996 hasn't has one replaced...certainly since not in my 7 years ownership.
The car has done 88k and I can't see anything in the service history.
I have only driven about 11k in 7 years.
Second question....and again I'm sorry....but it's about the IMS bearing. It's still the original bearing in my car...am I correct in thinking this year has a double or dual row IMS bearing?
I hope the bearing is OK....and there is no evidence of any metal filings or similar in the oil filter.....I run MOBILE ONE 0w40 and changed annually.....I keep the old oil filter. Is it recommended to replace this bearing as a just in case?.....and if so could someone please recommend a suitable replacement and /or a specialist to carry out the work....I don't think I could afford a Porsche main dealer to do the job!!

I hope you can advise Myron the above.

Yes you have an AOS. They do fail, but you do get some warning- smoky exhaust and oil consumption increase. The part is cheap but the labour can be problematic... I think they can be changed in situ with a C2, but best practice is to drop the engine for a C4.

Yes with a 98 you have the dual row bearing, as long as no one has 'upgraded' it. As such, failures are very rare. If there are no particles in the filter then I'd not worry. Have it checked for play when you need a clutch.

Many thanks...I feel somewhat reassured regarding the IMS bearing. My car is a Tiptronic.......can it he bearing still be checked relatively easily?

Yes... though it still requires a partial engine drop etc as per a manual car so is not something to do lightly...

iirc, from when I was considering an IMS replacement on my 996C4 back in 2012, it's a more expensive job to do on a Tip than on a manual car as it takes longer.

AOS .. these days on a manual i prefer to drop the engine to replace , it can be a lot of grief and time to do it in situ .. 8 HRs.

On a Tip then i'm not sure its even possible to change in situ .. there simply isn't the access to get at it .. 13 hrs to replace .

For an AOS to be faulty then the usual symptom is excessive smoke from both tailpipes .. you can sometimes get a squeal type of noise but smoke is the main symptom .

With the miles you are doing and no actual fault then imho i would leave it .

To Check an IMS bearing then its again an engine drop and removal of the box / flywheel .

I feel the odds of a failure at this milage are slim .. i can't say it won't happen .. hell anything can happen but its unlikely .

Best check is to look in the plastic oil canister on an oil / filter change .. you are looking for chrome .. very shiny particles of metal .

At this mileage i would be using 5W/40 mobil 1 oil .. people recommend many different types and grades but this is what i would use .

Many thanks again......I always ask the mechanic to give me the oil filter after an oil change....I cut so a can "roll it out do to speak and look at every part...the inner and outer ....and touch wood its totally clear of any metal particles etc.....i actually put it back in the filter box then rap it in a plastic bag and keep it next to the spare wheel....!!
Thanks again.
