You know the topic what have you bought your car this week ??
well I have bought,, new coil packs,, battery,, starter motor,, 2 rear tyres and its still not fixed think the starter cable has gone now !!!,,, I was thinking of getting rid I need an exhaust but the cost is something to think about,, any ideas on Exhaust systems going to change the lot seen a Dansk system on design 911 for about £1600,, but not sure if my indie will fit if I supply !!,,oh front coolant pipes leaking now been quoted £700 !!!
Absolutely love the car and drive but my patience and wallet wearing thin !!

You need to find a different mechanic mate.

Don't bother with the DANSK - they drop to bits after 12 months. Top gear is the way to go - around £450 for a pair of their mild sport back boxes and the build quality is miles better than DANSK.

£700 for a leaking coolant pipe is taking the absolute PISH!!!!!! I'd expect nearer £70.

Bob,I agree with Alex, unless you have to do the coolant pipes that go over the rear Axel then its not an expensive job . find a new indie . exhaust dont go near Dansk they are rubbish quality . Topgear Exhaust are where you want to be , they are a site sponsor and forum members get 10% off the listed prices ,they also offer a payment plan option

an example the 996 sports back boxes £450 inc free delivery
with the forum discount £405 inc free delivery.

but dont get disheartened with the car , just ask on here as you have done and hopefully you can get pointers to a cheaper option

I hear you. My car was the same during the first 3/4 years of ownership but that was just over a decade ago. For years now I can only remember paying for routine servicing costs at my OPC and it runs like a dream. I haven't had a big bill in years and I have the comfort that everything has been replaced, albeit at a bashing to my wallet at the time but I wouldn't sell it. You migh be at that point where everthing will will soon be done and you can just enjoy it without worry. That wonderful point in time does happen eventually. I agree with changing your garage though.

The starter cable, exhaust boxes and cooling system are all going to need doing sooner or later, so no surprises really. Can you sell the car with that lot needing doing? IMHO much better to fix them up and fall in love with the car again.
Also, good advice above.

Download a copy of PET from somewhere. Ask the indy what the part number is of the pipe which needs replacing (or have a look and figure it out yourself using the diagrams). Then search the part number and find out how much it costs to buy.

Always the first step before agreeing to any work.

£30 for the pipe, £670 for 3 hours labour

Do you need to use a Porsche Indy? Why not your local friendly mechanic?
I understand for diagnosis or a service you may want to use a specialist to have the stamp but for most jobs they are just cars and be worked on by anyone.

Regarding changing the exhaust while not a fun job it can be done at home. I did mine last year in a couple of sessions.

^^ this. I did similar when I was quoted £££ to replace a radiator fan on my 4S. Had a look online to check prices and then realised it really didn't look that hard to fit. Found a new fan on eBay, fitted in an afternoon, and I am not someone normally prone to DIY.

Design911's website is a good start as it has the parts diagrams.

Echo what everyone else has said - owning a classic car can become a headache if you try and deal with everything at once. What I like to do and I'm sure most on here is arrange the jobs into a list with the ones that cannot wait and are safety / longevity related at the top and then move the cosmetic , minor issues to the bottom.

My exhaust has been blowing slightly since I purchased it and apart from a bit of a rasp on full beans it can wait a bit longer than say... a pair of tyres or a coolant leak.

Try and tackle it in bite size pieces than trying to compete the banquet in one go.

Thanks one and all,,,i have done bits and bobs myself, water pump was one of them and changed the starter motor, I just need reassuring with the cooling system and the CLUNK not starting needs a proper look at,, regarding my indie , the mechanic is great call me any time for advice etc its the front of house guy who can only be described as a doctors receptionist you know !!! S£$te !!,,this is last chance saloon Weds , gona tackle them re price as ive seen pipes various length etc but not all of them add up to £700 !!

Really appreciate the advice I aint getting rid I love the drive just the heartache I can do without !!

P.s posted on 996 forum when its a 997 !!! :floor:
