Check the connections at the starter motor and both earth straps. If it starts and runs ok with a charged battery. Either your battery is faulty or the diodes on the altenator have blown. Hope you didn't mix the wires up on the altenator.

Had a senior moment, got the blue and brown mixed up like a twat! All fixed now and running again, thankfully running it with the blue and the brown the wrong way round has had no dire effects. What an idiot!🤪

You're not the first

That makes me feel better :)

The way the wires come out of the cable sheath direct you to put them on incorrectly, the brown is naturally pushed to the blue wires position. I'm actually very surprised at how small the brown wire and its terminal size is.

Had a nice little run out last night and to work this morning. MOT tomorrow.

So after my fan refurb the car went straight off to the paint shop for some tidying up.
I therefore did not realise my alternator was not charging my battery. The battery light is not coming on but checking the voltage at the battery with the engine running im only seeing 12v.
So i need to whip the alternator off and see if i also have got my wires crossed!
Or could it be a faulty voltage regulator which i fitted? Its marked up as a Beru part bit it was very cheap off the internet. You do hear of fake components being sold.
So to clarify, the blue wire goes to the insulated terminal and the brown wire to the alternator chassis?
But shouldnt my battery warning light be on ??

Hi there, I had the same issue after my rebuild, the alternator not charging the battery. It's unlikely to be your new regulator, it's more likely to be the alternator itself.

I took mine to a local specialist and he diagnosed an issue with the rectifier, swapped it out for a new one, cost circa £100. Put it back in and all was well.

Mine did cause the battery light to illuminate however.

You are correct on which wire should be where, the wires on mine naturally sat the other way round when I fitted it, hence my mistake. I think the battery light was on when I had my wires crossed, but not 100% sure now.

Edit, just reread my post when I made the mistake, I think I would have mentioned the battery light, so I don't think it cam on with the wires swapped, but not 100% sure, sorry i can't be definite on that point.

So was my own stupid fault. Found the 8mm nut securing the main power lead rattling around inside the plastic end cap ! I mustn't of tightened it up when I put it back together after doing the fan.
Charging now but only 13v on tick over. I have a single pull conversion so alternator running slower than standard so maybe that's why ?

Ya wally :) I have single pulley conversion too, I haven't checked to see what it charges at at idle, I may get chance tonight.

Thread Dig.. :bye:

I am about to have my Fan repainted - do I go with Powder Coating it..?

Some say don't, unless you take it somewhere that is used to doing magnesium. Loads of threads on it just to add to the confusion.

So is the Fan [as well as the Shroud] Magnesium too..?

Hi

Have a look at my post on page 1 of this thread to see my experiences with powder coating

I now have paint on a new fan and no problems so far
