The Porsche Turbo (996) Tiptronic box is actually a Mercedes 722.653 box (590 ft/lbs 800 nm holding capacity).

In fact I'm pretty sure all the Tip boxes are actually Merc 722 box variations.

It's also the same box used in the McLaren SLR only with different clutch packs . All of which a retrofittable to our Tiptronics if you want to run big power.

I decided on a Holibox for mine for competition but during my research travels I had a look into the capabilities of the 722.

You can do loads with the 722 and the Mercedes forums are leaps and bounds ahead with this box compared to the Porsche enthusiasts;

Add another clutch pack in between gear 3-4, rebuild with uprated clutch packs , Rev match on downshift, Shift much faster. There is DIY's for all of these if you can find them.

Here let me throw you some bones.

This was initially just a response to a post in a separate thread guys so S ,P and G aren't exactly my finest.

Happy to re-write this if the Admin feels the forum would benefit from this post.

Any questions fire away!

I was a little confused by this thread but i assume its part of some other thread and is now seperate ?

original thread if so please .. id like to have a read .

All i can add ..

The Turbo was released in the second half of 2000 but as such it is a 2001 model .. so technically the first Turbo is a 2001 .

They had the Merc box as standard , the ZF was used in other models up until 2002 when they switched to the Merc boxes .

Back in the late 1990,s and Porsche were almost bankrupt .. they couldn,t afford to design their own boxes .

The Merc box is fine for the Turbo and a limited increase in power .. if you start pushing the limits though then modification is required ..

Clutch packs and i think brake bands , not sure as its not my area im afraid but it is logicall ..

You upgrade the clutch on a manual .. well a Tip is not really any different in a sense .

i would also agree its probably an over looked item when increaseing BHP on the engines so a thread on it is well worth it :thumb:

Excellent research Si! All very informative. Thank you for sharing

Explanation Of Clutch Slip

A quick touch on people with clutches slipping as some of you have messaged me on this.

I'll try and give an explanation of what is happening.

The Engine needs to get the power it creates to the driving wheels of your car so it needs to make literally, a hand shake deal.

We will call (1)The Engine Barbara and (2) The Driving Wheels Geoffrey for the purpose of this explanation.

When Barbara and Geoff make their deal they exclusively shake hands in the Gearbox.

However, if for example Barbara is making too much power (above 590ft/lbs) she cannot shake hands with Geoffrey for very long before their hands slip out of the hand shake.

If any of their hands slip, both of their hands will become permanently blistered meaning that the next time they shake hand they aren't able to apply as much force as last time as a result of the pain and/ or damage.

This is what is happening when your gearbox is slipping. Its also will get more frequent once it has slipped the first time.

So What Is Some Of The Solutions?

(1)

Geoff and Barbara drastically increase their hand shake pressure (Essentially they squeeze their hands together more tightly.)

-This is known as increasing the Valve Body Pressure . This can be done electronically via a standalone such as the one above or Physically through means of porting which is much more invasive.

(2)

Geoff and Barbara wear special sticky gloves to prevent slippage

-This is known as fitting aftermarket clutches for increased grip.

I believe my 2007 C55 AMG has this gearbox, I'd love it if it rev-matched on the downshift.

I may be wrong, but I believe yours would have the 722.9 "7G Tronic" - that's what was in my 05 CLK AMG at least...

Contemporary C classes had the 7G-tronic but IIRC the C55 had the older unit as it was thought to be too near the torque limit of the 7.

That was certainly the case on the R230 SL55. It runs a 5 speed auto whereas others run 7 speed.

Martin does your SL63 run the same or similiar 722 gearbox?

Mine is an SL55 with the F1 pack, hence it looks like an SL65 from the front. I am not sure which model of gearbox it is, but it is definitely a 5 speed with comfort and sports setting, starts off in second gear on comfort mode and has flappy paddles. It is ponderously slow and suits the nature of the supercharged V8 with massive torque.
